NICHOLAS POWERS SENTENCED FOR SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE IN DONCASTER
A man from Doncaster, Nicholas Powers, has been convicted and sentenced to over 14 years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against children over a span of two decades. The 56-year-old resident of Belmont Avenue pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of sexual activity with a child and three counts of indecent assault, highlighting the severity and duration of his criminal conduct.
The investigation into Powers’ crimes was triggered in December 2021 when he was arrested following an incident involving a teenage boy.
Powers had picked up the young male in his vehicle, drove him to his home, and subjected him to sexual assault.
During this encounter, Powers, who had met the victim online, forced the boy to perform a sexual act on him and touched him inappropriately.
After the assault, Powers drove the boy back to his residence, warning him to remain silent about what had transpired.
He explicitly told the victim that if he disclosed the incident to anyone, he would “get done,” a threat that left the young boy feeling disgusted, ashamed, and terrified.
The victim, who was left with deep emotional scars, confided in his mother later that evening.
She discovered his phone in a bin and reported the incident to the police, initiating a thorough investigation.
The trauma experienced by the victim was compounded by feelings of shame and suicidal thoughts, illustrating the profound impact of Powers’ actions.
In addition to this case, Powers admitted to sexually abusing a teenage girl in September 2001.
He had lured her with alcohol, specifically home-brewed wine, before kissing her and assaulting her sexually.
The girl recalled feeling disgusted and overwhelmed, with Powers warning her not to tell anyone.
Her subsequent struggles with mental health led her to self-harm, revealing the lasting damage caused by the abuse.
The investigating officer, Alexandra Storey, emphasized the cruelty of Powers’ actions, stating, “Powers knew his victims were underage but completely ignored this and subjected them to unimaginable abuse which saw them contemplate suicide and resort to self-harming.
In another act of cruelty and dominance over them, he then threatened them to keep quiet about what had happened.” Further investigations uncovered that Powers had engaged in online grooming, where he arranged to meet a decoy posing as a 15-year-old boy after exchanging explicit messages via a mobile app.
His criminal record also includes two counts of making indecent photographs of a child, as well as charges related to attempting to communicate sexually with a minor and attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
On Thursday, August 31, at Sheffield Crown Court, Powers was sentenced to a term of 14 years and five months in prison.
The court also ordered that he be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, issued a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), and a lifetime restraining order to protect potential future victims.
Officer Storey expressed her relief and hope that the sentence would provide some measure of closure for the victims, stating, “This has been a lengthy investigation involving two young victims who endured unthinkable abuse and were left with significant mental health problems.
I want to commend their bravery in coming forward and helping us put Powers behind bars.
He is now facing the consequences of his actions and justice has now been served.
I hope this sentence brings his victims closure as they begin to move forward with their lives.” She also reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting children online, urging anyone with concerns or information about online exploitation to contact authorities immediately.
The police emphasized that victims of sexual offenses are protected by lifelong anonymity under the Sexual Offences Act, and it remains illegal to identify or share information that could lead to the identification of victims.
