NICHOLAS DAY FROM BRIGHTON SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING CHILDREN IN COLCHESTER AND MALDON
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers faced by vulnerable children, Nicholas Day, a 20-year-old man residing on Marine Parade in Brighton, has been convicted and sentenced for multiple serious offenses involving minors. The incidents took place in different locations, including Colchester and Maldon, and involved grooming and inappropriate sexual conduct with young girls.
According to court records, Day engaged in a series of manipulative and predatory behaviors targeting a girl with special needs from Colchester.
The girl, who was only 12 years old at the time, met Day outside a bus stop near her school in her village.
Their initial contact was made through social media in October of the previous year, leading to a pattern of repeated messaging and phone calls.
Prosecutor John Caudle described the nature of their communications as romantic, with Day attempting to establish a relationship with the young girl.
Eventually, the pair arranged to meet in an area known as The Green in Layer-de-la-Haye.
During their meeting, they played on the swings together, an activity that was part of Day’s grooming strategy.
When he attempted to hug her, she refused, but the incident was witnessed by her brother, who was aware of her plans to meet a 19-year-old.
Her brother informed their father, who intervened by confronting Day at the scene.
The defendant fled the area when approached, prompting her father to report the incident to social services, which subsequently involved the police.
Day was arrested on November 18, 2016.
During police interviews, he initially claimed ignorance of the girl’s true age, stating that she had added him on Facebook randomly and that she kept messaging him flirtatiously.
He also claimed he did not know her and that she kept ringing him, which he found flirtatious.
However, the evidence showed that Day had been aware of her age, initially believing she was 15 and later claiming she was 14.
Further investigations revealed that Day had also been involved with another minor, a 15-year-old girl, in 2016.
They met several times in Maldon, where they shared kisses and appeared to be in a relationship in her mind.
The girl believed they were dating, and they met on multiple occasions, including a notable meeting on September 9, 2016.
During these encounters, Day sent her explicit messages, including one where he asked if he could hold her in her bikini and described intimate physical contact.
In addition to these offenses, it was disclosed that Day has a prior conviction for sexual assault from 2015, indicating a pattern of concerning behavior.
Judge Emma Peters delivered the sentence, which included two years and four months of imprisonment.
Furthermore, Day was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of children from future harm.
