NICHOLAS DALBY SENTENCED TO ADDITIONAL EIGHT YEARS IN JAIL FOR ABUSE IN SELBY AND THIRSK
In March 2022, the criminal case against Nicholas Dalby, a man with a disturbing history of sexual offenses, took a significant turn as his prison sentence was extended by an additional eight years following the emergence of a second victim. Dalby, aged 50, who previously resided in the Selby area and more recently in Thirsk, was already serving time for abusing a child several years prior. The new charges and subsequent sentencing stemmed from a woman who came forward in 2020, revealing that Dalby had assaulted her over 15 years ago.According to her victim personal statement presented in court, she recounted the profound impact Dalby’s actions had on her life. She stated, “You shaped me as a child and teenager, but you will not shape me as an adult. This is where my strength has come from: I will not allow you to harm another child and by me speaking up and telling the truth, this is the only way to protect other girls from harm.” Her words underscored her resolve to prevent others from suffering similar trauma.
The allegations detailed that Dalby had raped and indecently assaulted the woman in various locations, including within his lorry, highlighting the disturbing nature of his crimes. When police initially arrested him, Dalby denied all accusations, maintaining his innocence during his first court appearance at York Crown Court. He refused to admit guilt at that stage, contesting the charges.
However, on the day scheduled for his trial, Dalby unexpectedly changed his plea. He admitted to three counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and one count of indecency with a child. This plea change led to a sentencing decision that saw him receive an additional eight years in prison, to be served consecutively to his existing sentence. Furthermore, upon his eventual release, he will be subject to an extra year of prison licence conditions.
In addition to his extended incarceration, Dalby was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offenses. He will also be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and public safety measures. The case highlights the serious consequences faced by individuals who commit such heinous acts, and the justice system’s efforts to protect vulnerable victims from further harm.
