THIRSK ARMY SERGEANT MICHAEL BAKER JAILED FOR UNDER-AGE SEX WITH 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL NEAR TOPCLIFFE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, Michael Baker, a 40-year-old army sergeant, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a minor and smuggling a 13-year-old girl into military barracks for illicit purposes.

The incident took place at Allanbrooke Barracks in Topcliffe, a location close to Thirsk, where Baker, originally from Hereford, attempted to conceal the girl under a blanket to gain entry. His actions came to light after the girl’s family uncovered a series of explicit letters he had written to her, revealing a disturbing pattern of grooming and predatory behavior.

Despite Baker’s initial denial of the girl’s account, the jury accepted the prosecution’s evidence that the letters he sent were part of a set of “fantasy plans” that he had devised for her. The court heard that Baker had sought to manipulate the young girl, who was only 13 at the time, by pretending to be interested in her and engaging in a series of inappropriate communications.

Judge John Walford, presiding over the case, delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Baker’s misconduct. He stated, “From reports I have read, you seem to have distorted views on the appropriateness of sex with under-age girls. You allowed yourself to seek sexual gratification from a girl young enough to be your daughter.”

During the proceedings, Baker’s defense attorney, Tim Roberts, revealed that Baker’s wife had divorced him as a result of the affair. Roberts expressed remorse on behalf of his client, saying, “He wanted to apologise for his behaviour, he wishes he could turn the clock back and that there are no lasting ill-effects to her.”

Baker, who served in the 40 Regiment Royal Artillery, told Teeside Crown Court that the girl had developed a crush on him and had pursued him through letters. He claimed that his correspondence was deliberately exaggerated to scare her off, asserting, “My letters were over the top to deter her, but they failed.”

However, the court found that Baker had driven the girl twice to his barracks with the apparent intention of discouraging her, but the girl testified that Baker had smuggled her into the barracks under a blanket in the back of his car, and that they had engaged in sexual activity on 20 occasions. Baker denied these allegations.

He was convicted on six counts of engaging in sexual acts with a minor between November 2001 and July 2002, when the girl was aged 13 and 14. As part of his sentence, Baker was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. The army issued a statement confirming that, as a consequence of his actions, Baker has been discharged from service, reflecting the severity of his misconduct and the military’s stance on such offenses.
