NEIL STEWART SENTENCED IN CUMBRIA FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL
A man from West Cumbria, Neil Stewart, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of grooming and repeatedly molesting a teenage girl. The sentencing took place at Carlisle Crown Court, where the court heard harrowing details of Stewart’s criminal conduct and the profound impact it had on his victim.
Neil Stewart, aged 41, from Poole Road, Salterbeck, was found guilty after admitting to a charge of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
Despite his admission, prosecutors argued that Stewart showed no genuine remorse for his actions.
Instead, they claimed he attempted to shift blame onto the victim, engaging in what was described as “self-justification” during the proceedings.
The court was presented with a powerful impact statement from the teenage girl, who recounted how her life had been shattered by Stewart’s abuse.
She described feeling as if her world had been torn apart and admitted to experiencing suicidal thoughts in the aftermath of the incidents.
The girl revealed her initial fears about reporting the abuse, stating, “I didn’t think there was anything I could do as I didn’t think anyone would believe me over him.” Her feelings of isolation were evident as she shared her reluctance to leave her home, feeling overwhelmed by the trauma she endured.
In addition to the victim’s statement, her mother also delivered a heartfelt account of the ordeal.
She described the experience as “torturous” and emphasized the significant toll it had taken on her family’s well-being.
The emotional weight of the case was palpable in her words, highlighting the devastating effects of Stewart’s actions.
During the hearing, Stewart’s defense barrister, Isabella Denn-White, argued that her client was genuinely remorseful.
She stated, “He knows what happened was unacceptable, knows there is no way to justify it and knows it was completely wrong.
He is extremely shameful for what went on.
It is his fault.” Ms.
Denn-White suggested that instead of immediate imprisonment, Stewart could potentially serve a suspended sentence combined with rehabilitative work with professionals, aimed at preventing future offenses and ensuring public safety.
She pointed out that Stewart had no previous convictions and was supported by several character references.
However, Judge Michael Fanning dismissed these arguments, asserting that only immediate imprisonment was appropriate given the severity of the crime.
He sentenced Stewart to four years and six months in prison.
The judge described Stewart’s conduct as treating the girl as a “sexual object” and engaging in “deviant” criminal behavior.
He emphasized the irreversible damage caused to victims of sexual abuse, stating, “The damage to somebody who has been abused in this way, well, it’s irreparable.
She won’t get over it.” Judge Fanning also addressed the character reference that expressed disbelief that Stewart’s name would be listed on the sex offenders’ register, condemning Stewart’s actions by stating, “You preyed on her.
You are a paedophile and you are rightly on that (register).” As part of his sentence, Stewart is required to comply with indefinite sex offender register notification requirements.
Furthermore, he is likely to face restrictions on working with children and vulnerable individuals in the future, and a future application for a prevention order may impose strict conditions on his liberty to prevent further harm.
