NEIL MCKIMM FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES COMMITTED IN THE EIGHTIES

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Neil McKimm, a 38-year-old resident of Darlington, has been taken into custody after admitting to serious sexual offences that occurred during the 1980s.

McKimm, a veteran who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, appeared before Durham Crown Court to face the consequences of his past actions.

Last month, McKimm pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault and indecency with a child.

Following his admission, he was ordered to register as a sex offender, a step that underscores the severity of his crimes and the potential risk he poses to the community.

The court proceedings on that occasion marked a significant milestone in the case, but the final sentencing was postponed to allow for further assessment.

On the subsequent Friday, McKimm returned to Durham Crown Court for the sentencing phase.

However, Judge Christopher Prince decided to delay the final judgment, requesting a detailed report from the Probation Service.

The purpose of this report was to evaluate what measures, such as a Sexual Offences Protection Order, might be necessary to prevent McKimm from posing a future threat to children.

The judge emphasized that, based on the evidence and circumstances, a custodial sentence appeared unavoidable.

Judge Prince explicitly told McKimm, who resides on Redmire Close in Darlington, that he believed imprisonment was the most appropriate course of action.

The judge stated, “I’m of the view a custodial sentence is inevitable in this case and you can now start serving it in custody.” The final sentencing hearing has been scheduled for either next month or early February, allowing time for the probation report to be completed and considered.

During the hearing, McKimm’s legal representative, Jim Withyman, submitted two character references to the court.

He also mentioned that a third reference was being sought.

Unfortunately, McKimm’s commanding officers from the Territorial Army were unavailable to provide a character reference, as they were currently serving abroad.

Mr.

Withyman highlighted McKimm’s military service, noting that he completed two tours—one in Iraq and another in Afghanistan—and was honorably discharged after demonstrating commendable conduct during his service.

In his remarks, Mr.

Withyman acknowledged the gravity of McKimm’s actions, stating, “He had two tours, one each to Iraq and Afghanistan, and effectively acquitted himself well before he was given an honourable discharge.

He realises he has to be punished, but it’s for something he did a long time ago now.

He greatly regrets what he did.

He apologises for the distress caused.” The case continues to unfold as the court prepares to deliver its final judgment, with community safety and justice remaining at the forefront of proceedings.
