NEIL BOLTON FROM DONCASTER SENTENCED FOR HISTORIC UNDERAGE SEX OFFENSES IN SHETLAND
In a case that has spanned decades and involved serious allegations, Neil Bolton, a resident of Doncaster, has been subjected to a period of supervision following his conviction for historic sexual offenses involving a minor.The incident dates back to the late 1980s and early 1990s, when Bolton engaged in sexual activities with a girl who was only 14 years old at the time.
Neil Bolton, whose address is listed as Norfolk Avenue, Bircotes, appeared before Lerwick Sheriff Court on a recent Wednesday to face the charges.
The court proceedings revealed that Bolton had pleaded guilty to engaging in lewd, indecent, and libidinous conduct towards the young girl at a residence in Lerwick on multiple occasions, spanning from March 14, 1989, to March 13, 1990.
The charges also included allegations of repeatedly sexually penetrating her during this period.
Prosecutor Duncan Mackenzie provided details about the case, stating that the girl was 14 when she first entered into a relationship with Bolton.
At the time, Bolton was approximately 21 or 22 years old.
Mackenzie emphasized that both parties were aware of each other's ages, and the relationship eventually developed a sexual component.
The situation came to light when Bolton was caught with the girl by his own mother, who expressed concern over the significant age difference and the nature of their relationship.
The allegations resurfaced publicly in 2015 when Bolton initially denied any knowledge of the girl, claiming he did not know her at all.
This denial was part of the ongoing legal proceedings that eventually led to his guilty plea.
During the court hearing, Bolton's defense solicitor, Tommy Allan, referenced a social work report prepared after Bolton's plea.
The report highlighted that nearly 30 years had passed since the offenses occurred.
Based on this, the report recommended that a period of supervision would be an appropriate sentence, considering the elapsed time and Bolton's conduct since the incident.
Sheriff Philip Mann addressed the court, noting that Bolton's case was not an isolated incident, as he had a previous conviction for a similar offense committed shortly after the initial incident.
However, the sheriff also pointed out that the sexual activity was consensual, with no evidence of coercion involved.
Taking into account the significant time that had passed since the offenses and Bolton's lack of subsequent offending, Sheriff Mann decided that imprisonment was not necessary.
Instead, he sentenced Bolton to one year of supervision, along with 150 hours of unpaid work, and ordered him to register as a sex offender for the same period.
This case underscores the long-lasting impact of historic offenses and the judicial system's approach to balancing punishment with considerations of remorse and rehabilitation, especially when many years have elapsed since the crimes were committed.
