NEIL BIRD FROM YORK ESCAPES JAIL AFTER FILMING SEX ACT ON DOG AND SEXUAL OFFENSES IN YORK
In a case that has shocked the local community in York, Neil Gareth Bird, aged 45, from the Acomb area, was involved in a series of disturbing criminal activities that came to light during court proceedings in March 2022.Bird was found guilty of possessing extreme pornography, including images of children, and of filming himself engaging in a sexual act with a dog, which he subsequently shared via WhatsApp with a friend.
According to prosecutor Andrew Finlay, Bird's actions included not only the abuse of the defenseless animal but also the distribution of the footage to an acquaintance through the popular messaging platform.
The court heard that Bird had a collection of 38 extreme images and five indecent images depicting children aged between seven and ten.
These images were discovered during police searches of his devices, which also revealed a video of Bird having sex with a teenager.
The case against Bird was further complicated by the fact that he had met the teenage victim through an online dating website.
It was revealed that the teenager had initially lied about his age, claiming to be 18, but later disclosed his true age.
Despite the age discrepancy, the two had met in person and engaged in consensual sexual activity.
Police investigations uncovered a film showing Bird and the teenager involved in sexual acts, which was stored on Bird's tablet and mobile phone.
During the court hearing, Mr.
Finlay detailed the disturbing nature of Bird's offenses, emphasizing the severity of the images and videos found.
Bird pleaded guilty to two charges of possessing extreme pornography and four counts of possessing indecent images of children.
The images depicted children aged between seven and ten, adding to the gravity of his crimes.
In sentencing, Deputy Circuit Judge Tim Clayson handed Bird a 20-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.
The judge imposed a condition that Bird complete 20 days of rehabilitative activities, aiming to address his behavior and prevent future offenses.
The court also considered but ultimately declined to impose a sexual harm prevention order, which would have allowed police to monitor Bird's internet usage more closely.
Judge Clayson expressed the view that such an order was unnecessary, believing that the rehabilitative measures would be more effective in preventing further offending.
The defense team highlighted the personal and professional repercussions Bird had already faced, noting that he had lost his security clearance and would likely be unable to work in the same field in the future.
However, they also pointed out that Bird's employer had managed to find him alternative employment, allowing him to retain his job despite the allegations and convictions.
The case has left many in York questioning the extent of such offenses and the measures needed to prevent similar crimes in the future.
