BRYAN STANFORD FROM YORK SENTENCED FOR LIFE AFTER GROOMING AND RAPE OF CHILDREN IN NORTH-WEST DURHAM
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Bryan Stanford, a 51-year-old man from York, has been sentenced to life imprisonment following his heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse and grooming of two young boys in North-West Durham. The court heard how Stanford, a newspaper delivery driver, exploited his position and familiarity with the area to gain access to the family’s home, where he carried out his sinister plans.
Stanford’s criminal history is extensive.
He had previously served a decade behind bars for kidnapping and raping a schoolgirl, a conviction that dates back to 1988 when he was sentenced by Norwich Crown Court.
His criminal record also includes a 15-month sentence handed down in 1997 at York for indecently assaulting a young girl.
Despite these prior convictions, Stanford managed to reoffend, demonstrating a pattern of predatory behavior.
The court was informed that Stanford’s method involved ingratiating himself with the family, who resided in North-West Durham.
He initially made friends with them, ostensibly as part of his newspaper delivery route, but his true intent was to groom the two boys, aged 13 and six, for sexual abuse.
Prosecutor Julian Goose detailed how Stanford’s manipulative tactics included lavishing gifts upon the family to build trust and lower their defenses.
The abuse was carried out over a period of time, with one of the boys staying at Stanford’s flat in York for three days.
During this visit, the young boy was subjected to sexual assault twice, including rape and indecent assault.
The younger child was attacked in his own home while his parents were away, and Stanford went further by taking pornographic photographs of the young boy, adding a disturbing dimension to his crimes.
Judge Paul Hoffman, presiding over the case, emphasized the severity of Stanford’s actions and his dangerous nature.
He pointed out Stanford’s history of sexual offenses and his manipulative personality, describing him as a “schemer, manipulator and highly plausible paedophile.” The judge stated, “I have no alternative but to pass a life sentence, which I do with no lack of conviction and enthusiasm.
You are a dangerous man when young children of either sex are involved.” He further condemned Stanford’s conduct, saying, “You ingratiated yourself and you were the proverbial viper in the nest.
When the parents’ backs were turned, you were corrupting their children in an unspeakable and vile way.” The court’s decision reflects the gravity of Stanford’s crimes and the community’s need for justice for the victims involved in this deeply troubling case.
