NEIL BEVERLEY CAUGHT IN WYTHENSHAWE CHILD PREDATOR SCAM AT DEBDALE PARK

In August 2013, a disturbing case unfolded involving Neil Beverley, a man from Wythenshawe, who was caught in a police sting operation aimed at apprehending individuals seeking to exploit children online. The incident took place in the vicinity of Gorton, specifically at Debdale Park, where Beverley believed he was about to meet a young boy for abusive purposes.

Neil Beverley, aged 48 and residing on Abbotsleigh Avenue in Wythenshawe, had engaged in a series of online communications with what he thought was a man willing to facilitate a meeting with a seven-year-old boy. Unbeknownst to Beverley, these conversations were being monitored and recorded by undercover police officers. The officers had set up a trap, posing as the supposed contact, to catch him in the act of attempting to arrange child abuse.

The police operation culminated in a meeting at Debdale Park, where Beverley was met by two undercover officers. As he arrived at the designated location, Beverley even sent a text message to his supposed contact, stating, “I’m here,” confirming his presence. His arrival was part of the police’s plan to apprehend him, and he was promptly arrested on the spot. The incident was witnessed by the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N.), which reported on the event with shock and concern.

Following his arrest, authorities conducted a thorough examination of Beverley’s computer and electronic devices. The investigation uncovered not only the evidence of his intent to meet a child for abuse but also a collection of highly disturbing images and videos depicting child exploitation. These materials included some of the most vile and graphic content, which Beverley had stored and distributed. The court was informed that he had engaged in the possession and dissemination of indecent images of children, with charges including five counts of possession and two counts of distribution.

Neil Beverley, who worked professionally as a credit controller and had no prior criminal record, bizarrely claimed during the trial that his actions were part of a research project. He insisted that his purpose was to “trap” a paedophile and then report him to the authorities. However, the jury at Manchester Crown Court saw through his fabricated story and found him guilty of multiple serious charges. These included attempting to arrange or facilitate a child sex offence and actively seeking to meet a child for sexual purposes.

The court proceedings revealed that Beverley had used a chatroom to communicate with a police officer posing as a man named “Chris,” who was supposedly willing to help him meet a young boy. The meeting at the McDonald’s car park near Debdale Park took place in March of the previous year. During the investigation, authorities also discovered that Beverley had made another attempt to meet a child for abuse, although this second attempt did not materialize into a meeting.

In addition to the charges related to online communications and images, the police found a collection of child abuse videos and images on Beverley’s devices. The judge, Recorder Philip Cattan, emphasized the severity of Beverley’s actions, stating that the courts would do everything possible to protect children from such predators. He condemned Beverley’s behavior, describing it as joining a “vile chat room” and discussing in graphic detail his desire to abuse children, including explicit discussions about his depraved intentions.

As part of his sentence, Beverley was handed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order that will restrict his internet access and prevent him from contacting children indefinitely. Throughout the hearing, Beverley was seen sobbing uncontrollably and rocking in the courtroom, maintaining his innocence and shouting “I did not do it” as he was led away in handcuffs. His actions and the evidence presented painted a clear picture of a man intent on exploiting children, with the police and court determined to prevent any future harm.

Detective Constable Kirsty Simcox, who led the investigation at GMP’s sexual crime unit based at Nexus House in Tameside, expressed her firm stance on such cases. She stated, “I have no doubt that Beverley would have gone on to commit child sex offences. GMP is committed to detecting and investigating those who prey or seek to prey on children via the internet.” The police’s covert operation, which involved thousands of logged conversations on various platforms including Skype, email, and instant messaging, was instrumental in gathering the evidence needed to prosecute Beverley. The police welcomed the sentence, viewing it as a strong message to deter others from engaging in similar predatory behavior online.
