NEAL BOWDEN AND HAYLEY LANE FROM MIDDLESBROUGH FACE CRUELTY CHARGES OVER HORRIFIC DOG CONDITIONS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community in Middlesbrough, a couple has been found guilty of severe animal cruelty after their two dogs were discovered living in deplorable conditions.Neal Bowden and his partner Hayley Lane appeared before Teesside Magistrates’ Court to answer charges related to the neglect and suffering of their pets, which ultimately led to the euthanasia of one of the animals.
According to court records, the incident took place in August of the previous year at the couple’s residence on Strauss Road in South Bank.
The RSPCA was alerted to concerns about the welfare of the animals after community members raised alarms about the state of the property and the animals living within it.
An inspector from the RSPCA attended the property on August 24 to investigate these concerns.
During the inspection, it was revealed that the two dogs, identified as cross-breeds named Angel and Bonnie, were living in conditions described by the inspector as “dirty, disgusting, and unkempt.” Neal Bowden initially denied owning any dogs, but his claims were quickly contradicted when a dog appeared at the doorway of the property.
Confronted with this evidence, Bowden admitted to the inspector that one of the dogs was in a dire state and needed to be put down.
However, he claimed that he could not afford the veterinary fees necessary for euthanasia.
The court heard harrowing details about Angel, who was found unable to stand and was living in a room filled with the smell of urine and feces.
The dog was severely underweight, with overgrown nails and a body covered in fleas.
Veterinary scales revealed that Angel weighed just 7.81 kilograms, significantly below the healthy weight range for her breed and size, which should have been between 12 and 17 kilograms.
Photographs presented in court showed her emaciated condition, further emphasizing the severity of her suffering.
Bonnie, the other dog, was also found in a distressing state.
She exhibited extensive fur loss, was infested with fleas, and had thickened skin indicative of prolonged irritation.
The veterinarian at Stanhope Park Veterinary Hospital in Darlington confirmed that Bonnie was experiencing ongoing discomfort, scratching, and attempts to bite herself to alleviate the pain.
The vet concluded that both animals had been subjected to unnecessary suffering.
In light of these findings, the court sentenced Neal Bowden and Hayley Lane to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, they were both banned from keeping any animals for a period of five years.
As part of their sentence, Lane, aged 36, and Bowden, aged 37, were ordered to pay costs of £200, a victim surcharge of £128, and to complete rehabilitation days.
Lane received a community order, while Bowden was assigned an unpaid work requirement.
Following the court’s decision, the two dogs were signed over to the RSPCA.
Sadly, on veterinary advice, Angel was euthanized due to the extent of her suffering.
Bonnie was also taken into care, but her condition had been so severe that her future remained uncertain.
The case has highlighted the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect, serving as a stark reminder to the community of the responsibilities involved in pet ownership.
