NATHAN WADDELL FROM LEEDS SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND VIDEOS
Nathan Waddell, a man from Leeds, was found to have engaged in a disturbing pattern of online activity over a period of six weeks, involving at least 19 separate conversations on the messaging platform Telegram.Investigations into his electronic devices revealed that he had sent videos to multiple individuals within a single chat, demonstrating a concerning level of engagement in the distribution of illicit content.
Leeds Crown Court heard that Waddell had amassed nearly 1,000 images stored in a personal digital library.
These images depicted the most heinous forms of child abuse, involving victims as young as two years old.
The severity of these images was underscored by the fact that some of the content was of the most serious category, Category A, which signifies the highest level of criminality in such cases.
Judge Simon Batiste sentenced Waddell to two years in prison this week.
During the sentencing, the judge emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating, “The message must go out that if you distribute such vile images, then custody will follow that.
Some were of very young children.
It makes it more serious that you distributed them.” Prosecutor Charlotte Noddings explained that the National Crime Agency (NCA) had alerted West Yorkshire Police in August 2022 about an account uploading illegal images.
This account was eventually traced back to Waddell.
Following this lead, police arrested the 30-year-old man on November 29 at his former residence in Leeds.
During the arrest, authorities seized an iPhone, an Apple MacBook, and a USB stick, all of which contained evidence of his crimes.
On these devices, investigators discovered a total of 148 videos and images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe abuse.
Additionally, there were over 200 images in Category B and 570 in Category C, which are less severe but still illegal.
The police also recovered approximately 600 images categorized as Category Six, which are not illegal but feature children and suggest a potential sexual interest in minors, raising further concerns.
Following his arrest, Waddell was forthcoming with police, admitting to the charges against him.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing indecent images and three counts of possessing indecent images.
It was noted that he has no prior criminal convictions.
In mitigation, Laurence Dilworth, representing Waddell, explained that his client had been suffering from mental health issues, had lost his job, and had become increasingly withdrawn and isolated.
Dilworth stated that Waddell had turned to pornography and acknowledged a sexual attraction to children.
However, he also highlighted that Waddell had taken steps to address his problematic behavior by engaging with a children’s charity aimed at preventing sexual abuse.
Dilworth expressed that his client was ashamed of his actions and was actively working to change.
In addition to his prison sentence, Waddell was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
He was also issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), which restricts his internet usage to prevent further access to illegal or harmful material.
