BRAVE GIRL FACES 'UNFORGIVABLE' MONSTER WHO ABUSED HER IN COURT
At 34 years old, Nathan Smith admitted to engaging in sexual relations with a minor on at least six occasions during his initial court appearance last December.
Before his trial, the teenage victim was subjected to cross-examination during a preliminary hearing.
On February 6, via video link at Bradford Crown Court, the girl, who cannot be identified legally, confronted Smith and expressed her desire that he would regret his misconduct forever.
“Now I realize that what you did was wrong and unforgivable,” she told him.
The court was advised that Smith, residing on Gain Lane in Bradford, had groomed the young girl for sexual activity and falsely told her their relationship was “special.” Prosecutor Verity Barnes stated that Smith claimed to police he felt no sexual desire and characterized any kissing as just a single peck.
Grahame James, defending Smith, who does not have any previous criminal record, stated that his client is now extremely ashamed of his actions.
He said, “He takes full responsibility and refuses to place any blame on the victim.” The lawyer added, “He offers his sincere apologies to her and admits that he has lost everything because of this.
He feels completely broken and depressed, aware of his own guilt.” The judge, Jonathan Gibson, sentenced Smith to eight years and eight months in prison, commenting, “As an adult, he should have prevented this before any sexual contact happened.
His actions have had a serious impact on the victim.” Smith will also be mandated to register as a sex offender for life and must comply with an ongoing sexual harm prevention order and a permanent restraining order that prevents him from contacting the complainant and others involved in the case.
