NADINE WELLS FROM DERRY CONVICTED FOR CRUELTY TO GERMAN SHEPHERD AND PUPPIES

In a recent case that has drawn significant attention from animal welfare advocates, Nadine Wells, a backyard breeder residing at 76 Cornshell Fields in Derry, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to her German Shepherd named Bella, as well as two of her puppies. The conviction was handed down in connection with allegations of animal cruelty under the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

Wells, born on May 13, 1993, faced charges specifically related to the maltreatment of Bella and two of her offspring, despite Bella giving birth to a total of nine puppies. The authorities focused their investigation on these particular animals due to disturbing reports and evidence of neglect. The case was initiated after a complaint was lodged with the Derry City and Strabane District Council, which prompted an inspection by the council’s Animal Welfare Officer.

The complaint detailed a distressing scene where a German Shepherd puppy was observed hanging out of the top window of Wells’ residence, attempting to drink water from outside the house. This alarming sight prompted further investigation, revealing that the dogs were living in extremely unhygienic conditions. It was found that the animals had no access to water, and their living environment was deemed unsuitable and neglectful.

Following the investigation, all three dogs involved in the case were successfully re-homed by the local authority, ensuring their safety and well-being. The court proceedings resulted in Wells receiving a sentence of a two-year conditional discharge, along with a total financial penalty of £434 to cover costs associated with the case. Additionally, Wells was disqualified from owning or keeping any animals for a period of five years, a ban that will expire in May 2028.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about backyard breeding practices and the importance of animal welfare enforcement in the Derry area. The community and animal rights organizations continue to advocate for stricter regulations and greater awareness to prevent such cases of cruelty from recurring.
