NOTTINGHAM MAN RECEIVES SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR STALKING TEEN AND THREATENING MARRIAGE

A stalker became infatuated with a teenage college student demanding she split up from her boyfriend, telling people he was “going to buy her a ring” and that they were going to have “a big wedding in Nottingham”.

Muhammed Ali followed the young victim saying “I love you darling” and messaged her sister reiterating his desire to marry the teen.

The 27-year-old, of Hyson Green, turned up at the college where she was studying and continually refused to leave her alone.

Now, after six months of custody on remand, he has been warned that if he does not leave her alone he will be sent back behind bars.

Handing him a prison sentence of eight months and one week, suspended for two years, Judge Nirmal Shant KC said: “Stalking is a serious matter, it causes distress to the complainant.

“I have seen the (pre-sentence) report in which you still maintain this was wanted attention.

Let me make it plain to you, this was not wanted attention and you need to understand that clearly.

"This (stalking) was over a sustained period of time, some six months and the effect was to cause her to alter some aspects of her life and I take into account she was only 17 at the time of this behaviour so there is an element of vulnerability.

“You have spent a substantial period of time in custody but if you go back to stalking (the victim) regardless of having been in custody already, you will start with this sentence.” Prosecutor Denney Lau, said the stalking began in December 2023 and lasted until the summer of 2024 when Ali was arrested, charged and remanded into custody.

He said it started when the defendant approached the victim and her friend in a café and tried to get her name.

The prosecutor said: “Around a week later the defendant was there again, approached her and told her she was beautiful saying he was 19 but she did not believe him.

She gave him her mobile phone to get him away and he later messaged her to which she replied she had a boyfriend she was happy with but he refused to accept that.

“He approached her and told her she needed to break up with her boyfriend and told other people he was going to buy her a ring and that they were going to have a big wedding in Nottingham.

“In April, 2024, the victim was with her sister and the defendant approached them where the victim told him she wanted nothing to do with him and asked him to leave her alone but the defendant told her he loved her and was going to marry her.

She again asked him to leave her alone but he did not stop and started messaging the victim’s sister saying he wanted to get married to the victim.” Mr Lau said on May 7, last year, Ali again approached the victim, who was with a friend, and followed them saying ‘“I love you darling” and then later attended the college where the victim and her boyfriend were at a time he had no reason to.

The matter was reported to the police and Ali was arrested and later charged.

Ali, of Vincent Road, pleaded guilty to stalking and has no previous convictions or cautions.

Mitigation Benn Robinson said his client has found the past six months behind bars “difficult” and “just want to get out and see his family”.

He said: “What he did was wrong and he should have accepted that before and should have accepted what she told him.

He has no intention of contacting her again.” As part of the suspended sentence, the judge ordered Ali to attend 30 rehabilitation sessions and handed him a 10-year restraining order not to contact the victim, three members of her family or to go within 50m of any building belonging to Nottingham College, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham.
