LEEDS TEEN SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR BRUTAL GIRLFRIEND MURDER
A teenage man named Morgan Banks has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his 17-year-old girlfriend, Sophie Smith, in Leeds.Banks carried out a brutal attack on Smith, beating her after she gave a false confession understanding to him.
The attack involved a four-hour punishment beating, which resulted in severe injuries including 11 broken ribs, a broken eye socket, a broken nose, and numerous bruises.
Leeds Crown Court heard that Banks had become paranoid that their one-month-old son was not his and suspected her of infidelity involving his brother and cousin.
Prosecutor Michelle Colborne QC stated: 'This is not the first time he had been violent to her.' Banks was apprehended around 5:55am at his grandfather's house after the assault.
During police interviews, he admitted to kicking her in the head and ribs while she lay unconscious and headbutted her.
The post-mortem confirmed that Sophie died from multiple injuries caused by blunt trauma inflicted through fists and feet.
The judge expressed a view that Banks' troubled upbringing, including being taken into care after his father was jailed for beating his mother, contributed to his criminal behavior.
Banks, who has a significant criminal record of 30 convictions for 49 offenses, including assault, was sentenced to a minimum of 17 years before eligible for parole.
The court indicated that Banks would likely carry the memories of this violent act for the rest of his life.
The judge called it a 'tragic case of human relationships' and a 'savage and dreadful attack.' The case has attracted considerable media attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the offender's troubled background.
