MOHAMMED RAJA FROM BIRMINGHAM CAUGHT GROOMING DEAF DERBY SCHOOLGIRL
In April 2014, a disturbing case unfolded involving Mohammed Raja, a man from Birmingham, who targeted a profoundly deaf teenage girl attending a school in Derby. The incident highlighted the dangers faced by vulnerable young individuals and the importance of vigilance in protecting them from exploitation.
Raja, aged 24 at the time, used social media platforms, specifically Facebook, to establish a connection with the 15-year-old girl.
The girl, who was deaf, was subjected to grooming tactics through online messages, where Raja engaged her in conversations about marriage and even made inappropriate comments about pregnancy.
His online interactions included seeing her hearing aids during Skype calls, which confirmed her deafness to him.
According to reports, Raja's online communication began in September, when he sent her a friend request.
The girl accepted, and their exchange of messages soon turned inappropriate.
In one message, Raja expressed sexual desire, and in another, he posted a photograph of himself wearing only underwear.
These messages indicated his intent to pursue a sexual relationship, despite the girl’s age and vulnerability.
In November, Raja arranged to meet the girl at the gates of her school in Derby during lunchtime.
He arrived carrying a suitcase, which raised suspicion among those present.
The girl’s friend and her sister, who were also at the school gates, became wary of Raja’s presence.
They challenged him and urged him to get into their car, suspecting something was amiss.
As Raja attempted to walk away from the scene, the two girls followed him in their vehicle and convinced him to get inside, claiming they would drive him back to Birmingham.
However, instead of taking him home, the girls drove directly to a police station in Derby.
The police promptly arrested Raja upon arrival.
It was revealed that although Raja had arranged to meet the girl, the two never actually met in person before his arrest.
His actions, however, constituted an attempt at sexual grooming, which is a serious offense.
During the court proceedings at Derby Crown Court, Raja pleaded guilty to the charge of meeting a child following sexual grooming.
The court heard that his intentions were clearly inappropriate, and his actions demonstrated manipulative behavior.
His defense lawyer, Andrew Wesley, argued that Raja had not fully considered the consequences of his actions.
Wesley described Raja as a young man living a somewhat isolated life, without prior sexual relationships, and living away from his family.
Judge John Burgess sentenced Raja to 16 months in prison.
In his remarks, the judge emphasized the vulnerability of the victim, noting her profound deafness made her particularly susceptible.
The judge also pointed out that Raja had overstayed his visa, and he indicated that immigration authorities would likely deport him back to Pakistan upon his release.
The judge stated, “Having you deported is something I am going to recommend.” Furthermore, Raja was issued a sexual offences prevention order and was banned from working with children for ten years.
The court also recognized the efforts of the two girls, aged 15 and 19, who played a crucial role in apprehending Raja and preventing what could have been a more serious crime.
They were awarded nearly £1,000 from public funds in recognition of their bravery and instrumental role in bringing the offender to justice.
In conclusion, this case underscores the importance of vigilance and protective measures for vulnerable young people online.
It also highlights the ongoing need for law enforcement and community awareness to prevent similar incidents in the future.
