MOHAMMED NAYUM FROM BIRMINGHAM SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL EXPLOITATION AND GROOMING

A man from Birmingham, identified as Mohammed Nayum, has been handed a decade-long prison sentence after being convicted of serious crimes involving the sexual exploitation and grooming of children. The case, which uncovered disturbing details of Nayum’s predatory behavior, highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online and offline child abuse.

According to police reports, Nayum, aged 31, engaged in a series of heinous acts during the autumn of 2018. He targeted a vulnerable young boy, establishing a relationship that was rooted in manipulation and exploitation. Evidence revealed that Nayum provided the boy with drugs in exchange for sexual acts, a disturbing pattern that underscores the severity of his offenses. The police investigation uncovered further incriminating evidence, including communications that involved highly sexualized conversations with an individual he believed to be a 12-year-old boy. These exchanges were captured by officers from the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU), who meticulously gathered evidence to build a case against him.

Following the investigation, Nayum was arrested in May 2020. His case faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted court proceedings and caused postponements. Despite these setbacks, he was eventually brought to trial at Birmingham Crown Court in June 2022. During the trial, Nayum entered a plea of not guilty to all charges except for possession of a Class B drug. However, the jury found him guilty on six counts, which included engaging in sexual activity with a child, paying for sexual services involving a minor, possession of indecent images, and drug possession.

On December 19, 2022, the court sentenced Nayum to ten years in prison. The sentence also includes a requirement for him to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes. Additionally, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order, which aims to restrict his access to certain online platforms and prevent further offenses.

Detective Constable Mike Woodburn expressed appreciation for the victims and witnesses who came forward, acknowledging their bravery in providing evidence despite the long delays caused by the pandemic. He emphasized the police’s commitment to protecting children and combating online exploitation, stating, “We want to praise the victims and witnesses for their support and bravery giving evidence in this case, especially given the long but unavoidable delays.”

West Midlands Police reiterated their dedication to safeguarding children and stressed that there is no safe space online where offenders like Nayum can operate undetected. The force also shared online safety advice and urged the public to report any concerns related to online exploitation, reinforcing their ongoing efforts to keep communities safe from predators.
