MOHAMMED NAWAZ BRADFORD CHILD RAPE CASE: FUGITIVE SENTENCED TO 21 YEARS IN ABSENCE
In December 2010, a disturbing case involving serious sexual offenses committed by Mohammed Nawaz, a resident of Bradford, came to a close with a significant legal development.Nawaz, aged 57, was sentenced to 21 years in prison by Teesside Crown Court after being convicted of multiple counts of child rape and indecent assault.
The conviction was handed down in his absence, as Nawaz had disappeared during the trial proceedings, leading authorities to believe he fled the country, possibly to Pakistan.
According to court records, Nawaz was found guilty of four counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault involving two young girls.
The court heard harrowing details of his abuse, which spanned over a period of time and involved repeated acts of sexual violence.
The victim, a 13-year-old girl, was subjected to over 100 instances of sexual assault, with the court describing the abuse as both prolonged and manipulative.
Nawaz’s predatory behavior was characterized by the use of bribes, such as cigarettes, to lure and coerce the young girl, and he would often wait in his car for her to pass by on the street, demonstrating a calculated and ruthless approach to his crimes.
The court also revealed that Nawaz had assaulted an even younger girl, aged 11, further highlighting the extent of his predatory conduct.
The judge, Mr.
Justice Treacy, condemned Nawaz’s actions, emphasizing his apparent lack of remorse or shame.
The judge remarked that Nawaz’s conduct showed a “total absence of shame, of recognition of what he has done and of remorse,” underscoring the severity of his offenses.
Details of the abuse included incidents that took place at Nawaz’s flat located above his takeaway business in Stanningley, Leeds.
The judge described the acts as occurring on “dozens and dozens of occasions,” possibly reaching into the hundreds, illustrating the persistent nature of Nawaz’s criminal behavior.
The court also noted Nawaz’s manipulative tactics, which included exploiting the trust of the victims and using gifts to maintain control over them.
Despite his criminal activities, Nawaz was a well-respected figure within his local community.
He had lived in the UK for 40 years, operated a successful business, and was a landlord, which made his criminal conduct particularly shocking to those who knew him.
In response to his crimes, the court imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
This order prohibits Nawaz from contacting either of the victims and restricts him from having unsupervised contact with any girl under the age of 16.
Additionally, he is automatically barred from working with children in any capacity.
Detective Inspector Ian Mottershaw of West Yorkshire Police stated that authorities are actively investigating the possibility that Nawaz has fled the country.
He confirmed that efforts are underway to work with international law enforcement agencies to locate Nawaz and secure his return to the UK for serving his sentence.
The police have issued a public appeal, urging anyone with information about Nawaz’s whereabouts to come forward, either through local police channels or by contacting Crimestoppers, in hopes of bringing him to justice and ensuring he faces the consequences of his actions.
