June 2019 Dad-of-three jailed for luring runaway teen into van and raping her at family home A delivery driver has been jailed for plucking a runaway teen from a city street, plying her with cannabis and raping her in his marital home. Mohammed Basharat claimed he was 26 and lived with his parents, but was in fact ten years older and a father-of-three. He spotted the vulnerable girl wandering the streets of Birmingham on August 16, 2017 – after she fled her home in a row over Instagram. He convinced her to get into his van and drove her round for six hours, before ‘smuggling’ her back into his Hodge Hill home. There, he made the girl cover her head with a jacket – fearing his neighbours would see he had brought a young girl home. Basharat let the girl upstairs to sleep on his marital bed, but later sneaked into the room and raped her. Glyn Samuel, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said the victim had an argument with her family about her use of Instagram. She was punished by having her phone taken from her and was sent to her room. But when later called down for dinner, her family discovered she had run away after climbing out of a bathroom window, Mr Samuel said. He added: “The family went out looking for her. They did not know where she was and reported her missing that evening at about 9.30pm. “After she left the family home she was walking the streets of Birmingham and had no coat.” Mr Samuel said she was later spotted walking along a road in Hodge Hill by Basharat, who worked for TNT and was driving a company van. He beeped his horn and offered the teenager a lift which she accepted and he told her to get in the back of the van “where she would not be seen,” said Mr Samuel. Basharat told her he lived with his parents, when in fact he was a married man with three children, one of whom was 14, Mr Samuel said. Basharat then drove around for some period of time and at one point the he bought some cannabis which she smoked and which made her feel “dizzy and sleepy,” said the prosecutor. He said they drove to drove to Bassetts Pole near Lichfield and also to Star City. Mr Samuel said Basharat did not stop at Star City because he recognised one of the cars there and did not want to be seen by someone he knew. He eventually returned to his home where he insisted the teenager wear his jacket with the hood up because he wanted to avoid any neighbours seeing he was taking a young girl into the property, the jury was told. Mr Samuel said the pair watched TV and Basharat smoked some more cannabis before the victim became sleepy. The defendant told her she could sleep upstairs and she lay on a bed but he then woke her and joined her on the bed, it was alleged “She felt weak and scared. She realised she had got herself in a position she could not get out of, ” Mr Samuel said. The prosecutor said Basharat told her to take her underwear off and raped her, while holding her arms above her head. He said the attack happened when the defendant’s family were out of the country, adding that Basharat later dropped the teenager off at a shopping centre. She was found walking the streets by her grandparents and the defendant was later arrested while driving his van on Cannock Road. Basharat, of Twycross Grove, Hodge Hill, was found guilty of rape at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, June 24 and jailed for seven years. June 2019 Lying TNT delivery driver found guilty of raping 15-year-old runaway after giving her cannabis A lying delivery driver has been found guilty of raping a 15-year-old runaway at his Birmingham home. Mohammed Basharat , 36, had earlier drove around with the victim for six hours smoking cannabis, before smuggling her into his family house. The TNT driver, of Twycross Grove, Hodge Hill, was today found guilty of rape by a jury at the Birmingham Crown Court and jailed for seven years. He had denied the charge. The jury had earlier acquitted him of arranging the travel of another person with a view to exploitation. The court heard that the 15-year-old had run away from her home after a row with her parents over her use of Instagram on August 16 2017. She began walking the streets of the city and was spotted by Basharat, who was driving his TNT works van. He offered a lift to the victim who told him she had run away. He lied to her claiming he lived with his parents, when in fact he was a married man who had three children – including one who was 14. His wife and children were away in Pakistan at the time. Basharat then drove her around for a number of hours, travelling to Bassetts Pole near Lichfield and Star City, during which time they smoked cannabis. When he eventually took her to his home he made her put his jacket over her head, so neighbours would not see he was taking a young girl into his house. The court heard she went upstairs to sleep and he then joined her on the bed and raped her. He then dropped her off at a shopping centre the next day – giving her £5. In passing sentence Judge Richard Bond said: “She was both small in height and stature. “She was particularly vulnerable that day due to her personal circumstances. “She was walking the streets of Birmingham on her own and was visibly upset. “You were obviously concerned about her age. You said you were 26 when you were 36 and you gave a false name to her. “You told lies to ingratiate yourself with her and to put her at her ease.” The judge said Basharat had taken the girl back to his home and added: “I am satisfied by now you had taken the decision that you were going to have sex with the victim whether she wanted it or not. “She submitted to your unwanted advances and just lay there as you raped her on the marital bed.” He said he had read the girl’s victim impact statement in which she said she felt dirty and was always looking over her shoulder. The judge said he had taken into account that the defendant had no relevant previous convictions. Basharat had told the court that he had wanted to help the victim and claimed she had made sexual advances towards him in the van. He said there was no sexual activity at the house.
