MOHAMMAD AFZAL AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN BIRMINGHAM AND KENT

Almost three decades ago, a young student attending a prestigious boarding school in Kent was subjected to a traumatic sexual assault by a senior staff member.

The incident, which took place nearly 30 years prior, was reported by the victim, but troublingly, law enforcement authorities were never notified at the time.

The individual responsible for the assault was Dr.

Mohammad Afzal, who was the head of chemistry at the school and was referred to as "X" by the victim during her testimony.

The survivor recounted to the court that her decision to come forward was driven by a desire to find justice and to break the silence that had haunted her for decades.

She described feelings of helplessness and betrayal, emphasizing that the school’s response at the time was inadequate.

According to her, once the assault was known, the school chose to dismiss Dr.

Afzal but did not support her emotionally or psychologically.

"I received no mental health support whatsoever," she stated.

"I had to suffer in silence, treated as if I was dirt, discarded by those who should have protected me." The survivor, now an adult, addressed the court via video link from a separate room, revealing the profound impact of the abuse on her life.

She explained that her childhood was marred by fear and suppression.

"My voice was taken away from me when I was a child," she said.

"X effectively imprisoned me and terrified me.

My parents and the school did nothing to report his behavior to the police.

But I wanted to be brave—so I decided to speak out now, because this is not my shame." She expressed her resolve to no longer suffer in silence and to shed light on her experiences.

She also highlighted how her vulnerability, stemming from coming from a less privileged background compared to her peers, made her more susceptible to the manipulative tactics employed by Dr.

Afzal.

She admitted she had been unaware of the grooming signs such as emotional manipulation, coercion, and gaslighting that the perpetrator used.

"X taught me that words could become dangerous weapons in the mouth of a predator," she lamented.

Mohammad Afzal, who is now 66 years old and resides in Sheldon, Birmingham, was identified as the individual responsible for the assault.

Evidence emerged revealing that Afzal had planned the attack, having purchased alcohol beforehand with the intent to seduce the young girl.

The prosecution detailed how, following reports from the victim about the indecent assault, the school suspended Afzal but chose not to involve police at that stage.

It was not until 2019 that authorities initiated a criminal investigation after the victim, suffering from mental health struggles linked to the abuse, confided in police.

During the investigation, it was revealed that Dr.

Afzal lured the girl to his home within the school premises under the guise of babysitting.

When she became suspicious that no children were present, he made excuses and falsely told her he was calling her parents, claiming she was there to babysit.

The victim reported that Afzal came to visit her, appeared concerned about her well-being, and even offered to cook dinner.

She further testified that Afzal provided her with wine, which made her feel heavy and disoriented.

The assault escalated as he then got into bed with her and made inappropriate advances, asking her why she didn’t kiss him because he thought she was “a beautiful girl.” The court was shown how he forcibly kissed her, groped her breasts, and touched her inappropriately.

In addition to this incident, the court heard evidence suggesting that Afzal engaged in other inappropriate relationships with pupils during his tenure.

Authorities arrested him at Birmingham’s airport before he could board a flight to Dubai.

The court proceedings laid bare a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.

Afzal faced justice in Maidstone Crown Court, where he was convicted of sexual assault.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay his victim £1,000 in compensation.

Prosecutors highlighted that police had found corroborating documents in archives at Sutton Valence, including a tape recording of Afzal attempting to seduce another pupil, alongside written complaints supporting the victim’s allegations.

The judge, Recorder Patricia Hitchcock QC, condemned his actions, describing the victim’s feelings as "disgusting" and emphasizing the devastating effect on her life.

She also underscored that Kent Police remains committed to investigating all reports of sexual offenses, regardless of how much time has passed.

Deputy Chief Constable Dan Williams remarked that victims often show remarkable courage in speaking out and that justice must always be pursued.

A spokesperson for the school expressed strong condemnation of Dr.

Afzal’s conduct, offering sympathies to the victims.

They also revealed that the institution had reported the staff member to the Department for Education in 1993, immediately upon his suspension from the school.

However, no further action was taken by authorities at that time.

The school added that it has since improved its safeguarding procedures and continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its community members.
