MICK LAWSON FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER DRUNK CONFESSION
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Darlington, a man named Mick Lawson has been sentenced to over ten years in prison after his past crimes against a young girl resurfaced, leading to his eventual arrest and conviction. It all began when Lawson's wife, who was aware of his previous misconduct, chose not to report his past to the authorities.
The situation changed dramatically in December 2014, during a night when the couple was at home with a friend.
After consuming alcohol together, Lawson's wife, who had previously hinted at a significant secret, finally confronted her husband and urged him to reveal what he had been hiding.
Under the influence of alcohol and pressure from her, Lawson, who was 62 years old at the time, broke down and confessed to having abused a schoolgirl a decade earlier.
This confession was particularly shocking because Lawson had a known history of sexual misconduct, including a prior conviction in 1992 for fondling the breasts of a schoolgirl.
The revelation prompted the friend to immediately contact the police that very night.
The police responded swiftly, and Lawson was arrested on suspicion of multiple sexual offences.
The police also reached out to the second victim, who had previously tried to bury her traumatic experience.
In her statement, she described her feelings of shock and anger, noting that the past year had been a confusing and painful period for her.
Despite his drunken admission, Lawson initially pleaded not guilty to a series of sexual offences, and his case was scheduled for a trial at Teesside Crown Court.
However, he failed to appear on the first day of proceedings.
The court proceeded in his absence, and evidence was presented, including a recorded interview with the second victim, who was prepared to testify and be cross-examined.
Unexpectedly, Lawson arrived at court on the morning of the trial.
After discussions with his legal team, he changed his plea to guilty.
The judge, Simon Bourne-Arton, QC, sentenced him to ten years and two months in prison, emphasizing the severity and persistence of his offending behavior.
The judge stated, "The abuse was quite clearly persistent.
It was persistent and progressive, because you took every opportunity to carry out that activity.
You set out to groom her and abuse her to satisfy your selfish lust...
You obviously thought you had got away with it.
You have led a life unaffected by what you did.
She has not.
She has been deeply affected by what you did to her." Lawson's defense lawyer, Robin Denny, highlighted that his guilty plea was a mitigating factor, sparing the victim from having to testify in court.
Denny acknowledged that there was little else to mitigate the sentence, noting that Lawson did not attempt to shift blame elsewhere.
Lawson, who resides on Gladstone Street in Darlington, was convicted on multiple charges, including causing a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual activity with a child, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
His case has left a lasting impact on the victims and the community, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to protect vulnerable individuals from such heinous crimes.
