HARTLEPOOL WOMAN MICHAELA DURKIN SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG LOLA IN SHOCKING CASE

Michaela Durkin, a resident of Hartlepool, has been found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to her pet dog, Lola, a whippet, during the months of March and April in 2019. Born on June 13, 1995, and residing at Jesmond Gardens, Durkin’s case drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities and the local community alike.

According to court records, Durkin deliberately neglected her dog’s severe injury, which ultimately led to Lola having her right hind leg amputated. The incident came to light after a concerned member of the public contacted the RSPCA, having observed that Lola exhibited an obvious and painful injury. The dog was unable to bear weight on her leg, which was visibly swollen, prompting an investigation into her condition.

During questioning, Durkin falsely claimed that Lola had fallen down the stairs, injuring her leg. She told inspectors that the injury appeared to improve after a few days, which was inconsistent with the severity of the damage observed by veterinary professionals. Despite her claims, evidence from veterinarians indicated that Lola’s injury was at least four weeks old, with a fracture to her femur, muscle contractures, and limb shortening, suggesting prolonged suffering.

Prosecutor Dave Dedman, representing the RSPCA, explained that Lola was taken to a veterinary clinic where it was confirmed she could not support her weight. The vet’s assessment revealed a fracture that had developed over a lengthy period, and Lola was hospitalized on April 5, 2019. Sadly, due to the extent of the injury and muscle contraction, Lola’s leg was amputated on April 8, 2019.

Four days after the amputation, Durkin was interviewed and maintained that she believed Lola had not been herself for a few days but had since recovered, and she had no suspicion that her dog’s leg was broken. However, veterinary experts dismissed her account, emphasizing that the injury was not consistent with a simple fall and had occurred well before the time of the investigation.

Further allegations suggested that Lola’s injury might have been inflicted through substantial lateral force, with some reports indicating that Daniel Hunter, the father of Durkin’s children, may have kicked the dog. Despite these claims, no charges were filed against Hunter. The court noted that the injury was likely caused by prolonged neglect and possibly deliberate abuse, leading to the dog’s suffering and eventual amputation.

In addition to the physical abuse, the court examined Lola’s living conditions, which were described as sub-standard. A probation report highlighted Durkin’s personal and financial difficulties, including her inability to afford veterinary care at the time of the injury. Her solicitor, Gavin Musgrave, acknowledged the severity of Lola’s injuries and confirmed that the dog had been surrendered into the care of the RSPCA.

Musgrave expressed remorse on behalf of Durkin, stating, “She was a responsible dog owner and she’s had animals in the past. She’s very remorseful for the incident and she’s fearful of the consequences.”

In sentencing, the court imposed a 12-month community order, a fine totaling £485, and charges related to animal cruelty. Additionally, Durkin was disqualified from owning or controlling any animal for a period of ten years, a ban that will expire in July 2029. The case has sparked outrage within the Hartlepool community, highlighting the importance of animal welfare and the need for vigilance against neglect and abuse.
