BLACKBURN TEEN SENTENCED FOR SHARING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
Michael Wright, an 18-year-old resident of Blackburn, has been sentenced following his admission to possessing and sharing indecent images of children. The court heard that Wright had been involved with child sexual abuse material since he was 15, when he began downloading and sharing concerning images online.
Authorities received a tip-off that inappropriate images were uploaded on Reddit, leading to investigations.
Police traced the uploads to Wright's online accounts, which were linked to him, and conducted searches of his parents' home in July 2023.
They discovered a total of 300 images and 147 videos on his devices, with 84 videos classified in the most severe and disturbing category.
Chat logs further revealed that Wright had been sharing videos online with other users between June 2022 and January 2023, discussing the trading and acquisition of child abuse material.
His defense lawyer noted that Wright started this activity at age 15, citing his difficult upbringing, and claimed that he had no sexual gratification from his actions, nor was he the original creator of the images.
The lawyer also stated that Wright sought to communicate with others and gain popularity, intending no harm, and understood the illegality of his actions.
The sheriff, Morag McLaughlan, responded that the matter was very serious and ordered Wright to perform 200 hours of unpaid work and placed him under supervision for two years, emphasizing the importance of behavioral understanding and prevention of future offenses.
