MICHAEL WELLS FROM DARLINGTON JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE AND PREGNANCY OF TEENAGER IN TEESSIDE
In December 2020, a disturbing case involving a young girl from Darlington has culminated in the imprisonment of Michael Wells, a 22-year-old man found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor and causing her to become pregnant. The incident, which took place last year, has shocked the local community and highlighted the serious consequences of such predatory behavior.
According to court proceedings, Wells initiated a relationship with a girl who was under the age of 14 at the time.
The relationship was only uncovered after the girl’s mother became suspicious and contacted the police.
It was during this investigation that authorities learned of the inappropriate relationship and the subsequent pregnancy of the young girl.
Prosecutor Paul Abrahams detailed that Wells was 20 years old when the offence occurred, while the girl involved was still a child.
The girl’s mother had initially heard rumors that her daughter had been exchanging images with Wells.
However, she was reassured that the images were not explicit.
Despite this, her concerns grew when she discovered that her daughter was pregnant.
The mother initially believed pregnancy was unlikely but decided to contact law enforcement once her suspicions intensified.
Following the police intervention, Wells was issued a notice to cease all contact with the girl.
Unfortunately, this notice came too late, as the girl was already pregnant with Wells’ child.
The court was informed that due to the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy and the girl’s age, the pregnancy was terminated.
DNA testing confirmed that Wells was the biological father, although he denied any sexual activity with the girl during police interviews on two separate occasions.
Judge Recorder Jamie Hill QC, presiding over the case at Teesside Crown Court, addressed Wells directly.
He emphasized the gravity of the offence, noting that the fact the girl became pregnant and underwent an abortion made the crime even more serious.
The judge stated, “Whatever the approach of (the victim) towards you, she was only a teenager at the time.
Whatever you thought was going on inside your head, you must now understand that the relationship was entirely inappropriate and you were committing a serious criminal offence.” Wells, whose address is listed as Auckland Avenue, Darlington, was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Additionally, he was handed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and a notification order, which will require him to register as a sex offender and adhere to specific restrictions to prevent further harm.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of sexual abuse on young victims and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
