MICHAEL TRERISE SENTENCED FOR ABUSE IN COVENTRY AND STITHIANS, LEADING TO SUICIDE IN PLYMOUTH

In a tragic case that has shocked the communities of Coventry, Stithians, and Plymouth, a woman’s life was tragically cut short after enduring years of abuse at the hands of her stepfather, Michael Trerise. The court proceedings revealed a disturbing history of misconduct that spanned several decades and multiple locations.

Michael Trerise, aged 57 and residing in Stithians, Cornwall, was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting to eight counts of indecent assault. The charges stemmed from a pattern of abuse that reportedly began when his stepdaughter, Stephanie Randle, was between the ages of five and seven. The court heard that Trerise would often tie up the young girl, a disturbing act that was part of the ongoing abuse she suffered during her childhood.

During the court hearing, Trerise was shown to have written a confession note in which he expressed remorse and guilt, stating, “I feel responsible for her death.” This note was presented as evidence, highlighting the profound impact of his actions on his victim’s life.

The court was informed that Stephanie Randle, who was 34 years old at the time of her death, took her own life at her home in Mutley, Plymouth, on April 1, 2007. Her tragic death was a culmination of years of trauma and emotional suffering caused by her stepfather’s abuse.

Further details revealed that during her childhood, while living in Coventry, Randle had been subjected to disturbing acts of abuse by Trerise. It was reported that he would tie her up and blindfold her before engaging in sexual acts, all while her mother was away working at a pub. These acts of cruelty left deep scars on her psyche.

Following their divorce in the 1980s, Trerise returned to Cornwall, while Stephanie moved to Plymouth. Despite her adult life and her involvement in volunteering for the National Trust, she remained haunted by the memories of her childhood abuse. The court heard that her suffering was compounded by the fact that the abuse was inflicted on her regularly, twice a week, which contributed to her ongoing emotional distress.

The case has brought to light the devastating long-term effects of childhood abuse and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The court’s decision underscores the serious consequences of such misconduct and the tragic outcomes that can result when abuse goes unaddressed for years.
