MICHAEL SIMMONN SENTENCED IN CORNWALL FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILD
In July 2009, Michael Simmon, aged 42, was sentenced to four years in prison at Truro Crown Court after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a minor.The court heard that Simmon had developed a troubling relationship with a young girl while she was between the ages of 14 and 15, which ultimately led to sexual intercourse.
The case highlighted the disturbing nature of the abuse and the manipulative behavior exhibited by Simmon during the period of their association.
Mr.
Justice Royce addressed the court, stating, “The girl admired you and, in many ways with good reason.
But there came a time when things changed and you took advantage of her vulnerability.
The author of a pre-sentence report concluded that you systematically nurtured her feelings for you and exploited a vulnerable child for your own sexual needs.” He further emphasized the profound impact of Simmon’s actions, noting, “She has been badly affected by what took place.
She has been devastated and humiliated, and her entire family has been traumatized.
Her school work also suffered.
These are extremely serious matters.” While acknowledging Simmon’s age and previous good character, including his role as a father, the judge underscored the gravity of the offense.
“You are 42, and she was much, much younger.
I take into account your previous good character and that you have a good father, but life will be difficult for others whilst you are in prison.” In addition to the custodial sentence, a sexual harm prevention order was also imposed to prevent any further abuse or contact with minors.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of exploiting vulnerable children and the importance of safeguarding measures in place to protect young individuals from predatory behavior.
