MICHAEL SHUTTLEWORTH OF ISLE OF WIGHT JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a significant case that has drawn considerable attention on the Isle of Wight, Michael Shuttleworth, a 29-year-old resident of Oak Vale, Ryde, has been sentenced to prison following a series of disturbing offenses involving the attempted exploitation of a minor. The incidents, which took place over the course of 2020, culminated in Shuttleworth being convicted of multiple serious charges related to child sexual abuse and indecency.
Shuttleworth appeared before the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Thursday, June 22, for sentencing.
He had previously entered guilty pleas to several charges, including attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity between June 10 and July 27, 2020.
Additionally, he admitted to attempting to communicate sexually with a minor and to two counts of creating indecent images of a child on May 21, 2020.
The court was informed that Shuttleworth believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl, but in reality, he was speaking with an undercover police officer operating on messaging platforms Kik and Snapchat.
Prosecutor Tim Devlin outlined the disturbing nature of the communications, revealing that Shuttleworth's messages ranged from expressions of a desire to cuddle the girl to more explicit content.
He sent photographs of his genitals and extended invitations for her to masturbate and engage in sexual intercourse with him.
Law enforcement officials traced these messages back to Shuttleworth’s residence and conducted a search of his property.
During the search, officers discovered that he possessed two Category A and three Category B indecent images of children on his Samsung mobile device.
The pre-sentence report prepared for the court classified Shuttleworth as a medium risk offender.
It also suggested that he is 'likely' to have a sexual attraction to children, despite his claims to the contrary and his assertion that he derives no sexual gratification from such acts.
The report played a significant role in the sentencing decision.
In delivering the sentence, Mr.
Justice Saini sentenced Shuttleworth to four years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his actions and the need to protect the community from such offenders.
The case underscores ongoing concerns about online grooming and the exploitation of minors, especially in cases where offenders believe they are communicating with children but are actually speaking with law enforcement officers.
Earlier in the year, on April 17, 2023, Shuttleworth’s case was adjourned for further sentencing proceedings.
At that hearing, he admitted to attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and to other related charges.
The court ordered a pre-sentence report and granted him unconditional bail while he was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses and the ongoing monitoring required to prevent further harm.
