MICHAEL MINCHHELL AND SHOCKING REPEAT OFFENSES IN GATESHEAD
A well-known sex offender from Gateshead has been returned to incarceration after violating strict legal restrictions that aimed to prevent his illicit activities.The violations involved illicit communication with another convicted sex offender and failures to disclose possession of certain electronic devices to authorities.
Michael Minchell, whose criminal history includes serious crimes such as sexual assault and child abduction, was placed under a sexual harm prevention order in July 2020.
This order was specifically designed to restrict his interactions and possession of certain items, in an effort to mitigate risks associated with his past offences.
However, in June of this year, a routine visit from a risk management officer uncovered that Minchell was contravening the conditions set by the order.
It was discovered that Minchell possessed a mobile phone that he had failed to report to police authorities for a period of three months, which is a clear breach of the conditions of his order.
Additionally, he was found to have USB memory sticks in his possession that he had not disclosed as required by law.
More troubling was the revelation that he had maintained regular contact with another sex offender, a relationship he established while they were both incarcerated in prison, which was explicitly prohibited under the terms of his legal restrictions.
Furthermore, he had made contact with another individual with a history of sexual offences.
The case, brought before Newcastle Crown Court, revealed that Minchell, aged 57, has amassed a total of nine previous convictions.
Among these are serious crimes including a conviction in December 2020 for two counts of gross indecency with a child under 13 and indecent assault of a boy.
He also faced conviction in 2007 for three counts of sexual assault and child abduction, and in 1998 for indecent assault.
Notably, his criminal activities have attracted significant media attention in the past.
For instance, a report from ChronicleLive in December 2020 highlighted how a previous story about his foot fetish perversions prompted an earlier victim to come forward and report abuse that had occurred decades earlier.
During the recent hearings, Minchell’s defense team, led by Jane Foley, emphasized his vulnerability, stating that he has been subjected to frequent bullying and is easily manipulated.
Her statement suggested that he seeks social approval, struggles to maintain proper boundaries in prison, and has become isolated, suffering from anxiety and depression.
She also noted that his offending had led to him losing his employment.
Despite these assertions, Judge Julie Clemitson did not show leniency.
Minchell pleaded guilty to four counts of breaching his sexual harm prevention order and violating the terms of his suspended sentence.
The judge sentenced him to a total of 29 months in prison.
She made it clear that the measures, including the sexual harm prevention order and sex offender registration, are lifetime requirements that will follow him indefinitely.
In her remarks, Judge Clemitson pointed out Minchell’s consistent pattern of failing to comply with measures designed to manage and reduce his risk to the public.
She also highlighted his social isolation and job loss as consequences of his chosen lifestyle.
The judge emphasized that Minchell’s disregard for the imposed restrictions demonstrated a blatant prioritization of his own needs over the safety of others, indicating a concerning pattern of behavior that warrants ongoing supervision and regulation.
