MICHAEL LEE AND SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE IN CUMBRIA
A former soldier who volunteered to assist in the Ukraine conflict has been criminally charged after police uncovered a disturbing collection of extreme pornography and indecent cartoons of children.Michael Lee, aged 27, was among the early former British servicemen to go to Ukraine to fight, and his actions have now led to legal proceedings.
He has been placed on the Sex Offender Register following his admission to multiple offenses involving indecent images.
The charges stem from material found on two digital devices seized during a police search of Lee’s residence in Workington.
All of the illegal content involved animated cartoons of children, as was presented during his court hearing at Carlisle Crown Court.
Prosecutor Brendan Burke detailed the extent of the offences, revealing that they spanned over a period of six years.
The investigation was triggered after police executed a search warrant at Lee’s home and uncovered the devices containing the illicit images.
Lee, who now resides on Westminster Street in Gateshead, pleaded guilty to several counts of possessing indecent images.
Specifically, Lee admitted to possessing 317 extreme pornographic images that featured bestiality.
Additionally, he was found to have downloaded and stored a collection of indecent cartoons depicting children, including twelve categorized as the most severe, Category A; seven in Category B; and thirty-two in Category C.
He also possessed a prohibited image of a child, adding to the severity of his charges.
During the court hearing, Lee’s defense team, led by Kim Whittlestone, presented a character reference from a Ukrainian platoon commander who had served with Lee.
This reference highlighted that Lee was one of the first foreigners to volunteer for combat in Ukraine.
Lee used his military experience to assist in training other recruits to NATO standards and participated actively in military operations.
He was described as well-liked and respected among his comrades.
Ms.
Whittlestone provided context about Lee’s background, indicating that he faced a troubled upbringing marked by alcoholic parents and intervention from social services.
She revealed that Lee started drinking heavily at the age of 13 and had often referred to himself as a “functioning alcoholic.” Despite these challenges, she noted that since July of the previous year, Lee had maintained complete sobriety.
The defense counsel explained that volunteering in Ukraine provided Lee with focus and structure, which contributed significantly to his decision to abstain from alcohol.
She further acknowledged that, like many offenders in similar circumstances, Lee initially denied having any sexual interest in children when first confronted with evidence of his behavior.
However, she emphasized that Lee now fully accepts his situation and is committed to engaging in a sexual offender treatment program.
Judge Nicholas Barker took into account the lengthy period during which the offences occurred, from November 2015 to March 2021.
He also considered Lee’s challenging upbringing and the positive change he claimed volunteering in Ukraine had brought about.
The judge described Lee as a suitable candidate for an alternative sentence focused on rehabilitation rather than imprisonment.
Consequently, Judge Barker imposed a three-year community order, which includes 25 days of rehabilitation activities.
Lee is required to participate in a Sexual Offender Treatment Programme and will remain on the Sex Offender Register for five years.
As part of his sentence, he must complete 120 hours of unpaid work, signaling a focus on reform and community safety.
