MICHAEL KNIGHT FROM BLACKBURN BUSTED FOR ONLINE DECEPTION AND COURT ORDER BREACHES IN PRESTON
In June 2023, a serious incident involving Michael Knight, a known sex offender from Blackburn, unfolded in Preston.The case revealed that Knight had deliberately violated court-imposed restrictions and engaged in deceptive online communications, raising concerns about ongoing compliance and public safety.
According to court proceedings at Preston Crown Court, the 51-year-old offender was found to have lied about possessing a mobile phone, which was a direct breach of a court order.
The court heard that Knight had failed to notify authorities about his use of a mobile device, despite being legally required to do so.
This omission was uncovered when police officers observed Knight with a phone that he had not disclosed, prompting an investigation into potential violations of his legal obligations.
During the investigation, Knight attempted to dismiss the significance of the phone, claiming, “I knew this would happen.
It’s not a phone, it’s a battery,” when questioned by officers.
However, it was established that he had already disposed of the device prior to their arrival, making it impossible to retrieve and examine the phone for further evidence.
Further complicating the case, Knight was found to have used a false identity—namely, the alias Jack Keller—while engaging in online communications.
This act of deception was a breach of his notification requirements, which mandate that sex offenders must inform authorities of any online aliases or identities they use.
Knight’s failure to report his use of the pseudonym was another violation that contributed to the charges against him.
At the trial, Knight, who is currently without a fixed address but was formerly residing in Blackburn, denied one count of breaching his notification requirements and two counts of breaching a sexual harm prevention order.
Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty on all counts earlier this week.
As a result of the convictions, Knight was sentenced to a total of three years in prison.
The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in monitoring and enforcing compliance among convicted sex offenders, especially those who attempt to evade detection through deception and online anonymity.
