MICHAEL KING SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN LEEDS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES
Michael King, a resident of Leeds, was handed a significant prison sentence following his conviction for multiple sexual offences.Initially, he received a 10-year term for rape-related crimes, with an additional four-year sentence for other related offences, all to run concurrently.
In addition to his prison time, King was subjected to a one-year extended licence period, ensuring close supervision upon his release.
Furthermore, King was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, a measure that mandates ongoing monitoring and registration to protect the community.
He was also made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life, a legal restriction designed to prevent any future offending behavior and to impose certain conditions on his conduct.
The family of the victims expressed their disappointment with the length of the initial sentence, feeling it did not adequately reflect the severity of the crimes committed.
In response, Detective Constable Oliver Hunter, who was involved in the case, submitted a formal request to the reviewing lawyer to appeal the sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentences scheme, which allows for the review of sentences considered too lenient for the gravity of the offences.
This request was thoroughly assessed and supported by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Subsequently, an application was made by the Attorney General, which was heard at the Court of Appeal on the Friday following the initial sentencing.
During this hearing, the original sentence was quashed, and the court imposed a new, more severe sentence of 20 years in prison, along with a one-year extended licence period.
The sex offender conditions previously imposed on King remained unchanged, ensuring continued restrictions and monitoring.
The offences for which King was convicted spanned over a six-month period.
They came to light in December 2022 when the victim disclosed the abuse to a friend.
Following this revelation, officers from the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit provided support to the victim during video-recorded interviews.
The police conducted extensive enquiries, including securing forensic evidence, to build a comprehensive case against King and ensure justice was served.
