MICHAEL JONES CAUGHT IN LEEDS PAEDOPHILE SCANDAL

In October 2020, a disturbing case unfolded involving Michael Jones, a man from Leeds who was caught in a sting operation conducted by paedophile hunters.

Jones believed he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl online, but in reality, he was engaging with members of the Elusive Child Protection Unit, a vigilante group dedicated to exposing online predators.

Jones, aged 37, initiated contact with the group’s undercover female member over a span of 17 days starting from Halloween of the previous year.

During this period, he exchanged numerous messages, expressing inappropriate interest and making sexually explicit requests.

The confrontation culminated on November 16, when Jones was found at his sister’s flat in Dewsbury, after being identified and tracked by the group.

When approached by the vigilantes at the doorway, he responded with a dismissive shake of his head.

It was revealed during the court proceedings that Jones has a significant learning disability.

He usually resides with his other sister, who acts as his full-time carer, in Littlemoor Grove, Mirfield.

The case was brought before Leeds Crown Court, where prosecutor Michael Collins provided details of the investigation.

He explained that Jones had been messaging what he believed to be a 12-year-old girl, but in reality, the messages were with an adult woman posing as a child for the purpose of the sting.

The woman, who had joined the vigilante group a few months prior, created fake profiles on Facebook and a dating app called Meet4U.

She used a profile picture of a child and adopted the name ‘Sienna’.

Her strategy involved waiting for adults to contact her profile, at which point she would reveal that she was only 12 years old.

She maintained that she would respond to messages but did not initiate any sexual conversations.

As the communication progressed, the conversation moved to WhatsApp, where Jones made increasingly inappropriate comments.

He told the ‘child’ that her parents could not see their messages because they were encoded, and he complimented her profile picture, saying he would like to have a girlfriend like her.

He then crossed boundaries by asking her to touch herself, claiming he was doing the same, and even sent explicit photos of his boxer shorts and his genitals.

After viewing the images, he instructed her to delete them.

Jones also attempted to escalate the situation by suggesting they move to video calls, but the ‘girl’ claimed her camera was broken.

Throughout the exchanges, Jones expressed a desire to perform oral sex on her and have sex with her when she was older, though he did not make any concrete plans to meet in person.

His actions were ultimately interrupted when he was confronted at his sister’s flat after a shopping trip, leading to police involvement.

The vigilante group provided authorities with over 100 pages of chat logs, and Jones’s phone was confiscated.

He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to cause or incite a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

The court sentenced him to a three-year community order, which includes mandatory participation in a 60-day sex offender treatment program called New Me Strengths and 30 days of rehabilitation activities.

Additionally, Jones was placed under a five-year sexual harm prevention order, a measure typically aligned with the length of the sentence but extended by an extra two years by the judge to ensure greater protection.

Both of Jones’s sisters were present during the sentencing hearing, which underscored the seriousness of the case and the community’s efforts to combat online child exploitation.
