MICHAEL GURNEY FROM PONTNEWYNYDD ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY IN PONTYPOOL
In December 2018, a tragic case unfolded involving Michael Gurney, a 49-year-old resident of Hill Street, Pontnewynydd, who was found to possess a disturbing collection of illegal images. The investigation was initiated after authorities uncovered evidence of his involvement in viewing and storing highly illegal and disturbing material.Gurney was found to have in his possession a total of 12 Category A images, which represent the most severe form of child abuse, depicting the most heinous acts against minors. In addition to these, he also possessed 161 images classified as extreme pornography, which were described in court as being “grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character.” These images were stored on his computer, and their discovery raised serious concerns about his engagement with such material.
The police action was carried out by officers from the Gwent Police’s high-tech crime unit. On November 5, they executed a search warrant at Gurney’s residence in Pontypool, where they uncovered the illicit images stored on his computer system. During the investigation, it was also revealed that Gurney possessed additional images categorized as B and C level child abuse images, with one picture each in these categories.
Gurney subsequently pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of possessing indecent photographs of a child and one count of possessing extreme pornography. The offences spanned a period from 2013 to 2018, indicating a prolonged engagement with illegal material.
In court, Judge Jenkins considered the gravity of the offences but ultimately decided on a sentence that included a 26-week jail term, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, Gurney was placed under a two-year community order and required to participate in a 25-day rehabilitation and activity program. To further protect the public, he was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order for five years and was mandated to register as a sex offender for the same duration.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of illegal and harmful images, and the serious legal consequences faced by those involved in such activities.
