DARLINGTON MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL TWO-WEEK ASSAULT ON PARTNER AFTER PRISON RELEASE
A man named Metin Ucarcan has been convicted and sentenced for a series of violent assaults on his partner. After serving a prison sentence for burglary, Ucarcan resumed his abusive behavior shortly after his release in May 2024.
The court heard how he repeatedly punched and choked the woman, attempting to rekindle their relationship during this period.
Ryan Donoghue, the prosecutor, described multiple incidents where Ucarcan tried to contact her, threw stones at her windows, and on one occasion struck her with a stone.
On May 6, Ucarcan grabbed the woman by the throat, pushed her into a car during an argument, and on May 26, he assaulted her again by punching, smashing items in her house, and strangling her until she was unable to breathe, pushing her to the brink of death.
The court also heard about a particularly shocking incident following her grandfather’s funeral, where Ucarcan took her to a field, hit her with a mobile phone, and forced her to consider jumping off a bridge, treating her like a dog and encouraging her to jump.
Ucarcan pleaded guilty to charges including two counts of battery, intentional strangulation, criminal damage, and coercive and controlling behavior.
He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and was issued with a ten-year restraining order to protect the victim.
His behavior has been described as causing the woman to contemplate suicide, with her mental health severely impacted.
Ucarcan of Hewitson Road, Darlington, expressed remorse for his actions, especially attributing his behavior to alcohol consumption, and the court recognized this remorse in his sentencing.
The case underscores ongoing issues with domestic abuse and the importance of protective orders for victims.
