MAXIME OWONA AND SHOCKING RAPE IN BIRMINGHAM
Maxime Owona, a man with no fixed address, carried out a brutal and violent assault in Birmingham that has left a significant mark on the victim and the community alike.The incident took place in the early months of this year, specifically in April, when Owona forcefully entered a woman's residence located in the Tile Hill area of Coventry, a city within the West Midlands region.
According to reports, Owona targeted the woman’s home by first smashing a window to gain unauthorized entry.
The act was premeditated and destructive, highlighting the severity and intent behind his actions.
Once inside the residence, the situation escalated into a horrific ordeal as Owona, who was known to the victim, proceeded to physically overpower her.
He managed to wake her while she was in bed, and without consent, he pinned her down in a disturbing display of violence.
During the assault, Owona threatened the woman, making her fear for her personal safety and wellbeing.
His threats were serious and intimidating, indicating he intended to commit a sexual assault.
The victim experienced a traumatic experience, fearing for her life and safety in her own home, which should have been her sanctuary.
Despite the terror inflicted upon her, she summoned the courage to contact a relative during the assault.
Her quick thinking proved crucial, as her relative alerted law enforcement about the incident.
The police response was swift and efficient.
When the authorities arrived at the scene, Owona was still present in the victim's home.
He was immediately arrested and taken into custody.
During the initial stages of investigation, Owona provided a false name, attempting to evade identification, but police quickly uncovered his real identity.
The case proceeded to trial at Warwick Crown Court.
The evidence presented, combined with the victim’s testimony and forensic findings, led to a conviction.
On Monday, November 28, Owona was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 15 years for the crime of rape and trespass.
In addition to his prison sentence, he will be subject to lifelong registration as a sex offender.
Furthermore, a restraining order has been issued, legally prohibiting him from contacting or approaching the victim in any capacity.
DC Evie Griffiths, a member of West Midlands Police’s public protection unit, expressed her condemnation of the crime, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on the victim.
She stated, “This was a traumatic ordeal for the woman who was left fearing for her safety in the place she should feel most safe - her home.
She managed to contact a relative who alerted us to the attack.
And we were able to swiftly arrest Owona, who initially gave us a false name.
This was a despicable crime and he's now been put behind bars for a long time.”
