MATTHEW LEWIS FROM BRIGHTON JAILED FOR UPSKIRT SPY PEN INCIDENT AT MCDONALD'S
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Brighton, a man named Matthew Lewis has been sentenced to prison after he used a covert camera device to secretly photograph women beneath their skirts in a local McDonald's restaurant.On July 21 of the previous year, Lewis, aged 41 and residing on Harrington Place in Brighton, engaged in what appeared to be a casual conversation with a woman in her thirties at the Western Road branch of McDonald's.
The interaction was initially innocent, with Lewis showing her photographs of his family, including holiday pictures, as part of the conversation.
However, beneath this facade, he was secretly capturing images of her under the table using a spy pen equipped with a tiny camera.
The incident took a sinister turn when a vigilant customer seated behind Lewis noticed the images appearing on his mobile phone.
The bystander observed that Lewis was manipulating his phone with a stylus, seemingly playing with it, but what caught their attention was the fact that he was taking photographs up the woman's skirt and thighs without her knowledge.
This observant member of the public quickly intervened, alerting the woman to the suspicious activity.
The woman, upon realizing what was happening, snatched Lewis’s phone and discovered explicit images of her skirt and upper leg.
She attempted to delete the photos but also took a picture of Lewis himself, which she later posted on Facebook to document the incident.
Following this, police officers attended Lewis’s residence and recovered the images from his phone.
During police interviews, Lewis denied any wrongdoing, claiming he was innocent of the charges.
Despite his denial, the evidence was clear, and he was charged with outraging public decency.
Lewis, who has a criminal record with three previous convictions for 23 offences related to similar indecent acts and possession of indecent photographs of children, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The case was heard at Hove Crown Court, where Judge Paul Tain presided over the sentencing.
The judge described Lewis’s actions as “an assault on the freedom and independence” of the woman involved.
He emphasized that women should be able to go about their daily routines without fear of such invasive acts, comparing the violation to other forms of assault and violence.
Judge Tain highlighted the profound distress caused to the victim and others present in the McDonald's that day.
In his sentencing, Judge Tain decided that a custodial sentence was necessary, and Lewis was sentenced to seven months in prison.
The judge also criticized the Crown Prosecution Service for uploading the explicit photos to the digital case system, which he deemed unnecessary and questionable, emphasizing that such images should not have been shared or stored in that manner.
