SEX OFFENDER FACES JAIL THREAT
A CONVICTED sex offender who failed to notify police of his address for the Sex Offenders Register on two occasions could be facing a five-year jail sentence after admitting two charges in court.The court heard that Godwin had committed the first offence in November 2000 when he failed to comply with the two-week deadline in which he must inform police of his address.
In February, a similar incident occurred, but it had taken police until this month to trace Godwin and bring him to court.
David Taylor, prosecuting, said that Godwin had been convicted of the indecent assault of two girls under 14 in June 1996 and since then he had failed to notify police of his change of address on three occasions.
Naomi Turner, mitigating, said Godwin had trouble finding houses in the Ipswich area and had spent time living on the streets and sleeping at friends' houses.
"He registered for a period of time but lately failed to register – it was not a deliberate reason, he had just wanted to forget about what happened five years ago," she said.
