Matthew Fitzpatrick, 23, made a brief appearance at Chelmsford Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to a charge of raping the 68-year-old woman in December last year.
Fitzpatrick, of First Avenue, Sudbury, Suffolk, carried out the attack on December 2 in the folley between Butt Road and Walsingham Road.
The woman was returning from a shopping trip when the incident took place on a Sunday evening.
Judge Ben Pearson ordered a psychiatric report on Fitzpatrick and remanded him in custody until he is sentenced next month.
