DAVE HERRING FROM SUDBURY FACES JUSTICE AFTER CRUEL KICKING OF HEDGEHOG

In a disturbing incident that has shocked the local community of Sudbury, David Herring, born around 1968 and residing on Manor Road, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a hedgehog through an act of violence. The incident, which took place in the vicinity of his home, was captured on camera and subsequently brought to the attention of the RSPCA, leading to a thorough investigation.

Footage revealed a man approaching a house and placing an object on the porch area. Moments later, he was seen using his foot to pull a hedgehog from the porch, then delivering a forceful kick that sent the animal rolling several metres down the road. The video clearly depicted the moment of impact, with the final kick audible on the recording, illustrating the severity of the act.

Herring admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to the hedgehog, acknowledging that his actions were inappropriate. During the court proceedings, it was noted that he had a history of good character prior to this incident. The court also heard that Herring had suffered a heart attack within the past year and was under considerable stress at the time. He claimed that he initially thought the hedgehog was a rat, which contributed to his reckless behavior. The court emphasized that this was a one-off incident and not indicative of a pattern of cruelty.

Following the case, RSPCA Inspector Caroline Richardson commented on the severity of the act. She stated, “Having reviewed video footage it was clear the hedgehog was kicked with considerable force. The final kick can clearly be heard on the camera footage. The hedgehog rolls at speed several metres, out of sight. An expert vet who examined the footage said the hedgehog would have suffered unnecessarily during this time and the suffering would have extended beyond the time of the kicking if an injury was caused. They believed the suffering caused was due to pain and fear. This was an incident which showed a clear disregard for a wild animal.”

As a result of his actions, Herring was sentenced to a fine of £277, ordered to pay £300 in costs, and a victim surcharge of £34. The case has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and residents of Sudbury, highlighting the importance of protecting wildlife from cruelty and ensuring accountability for such acts.
