MATTHEW HUCKLE AND JACK CAUGHT IN GATESHEAD: SERIAL OFFENDERS REOFFEND AFTER RELEASE
In a disturbing series of events in Gateshead, two known sex offenders, Matthew Huckle and Jack, have been caught engaging in illegal online activities targeting minors, despite previous convictions and recent releases from prison.Matthew Huckle, also known as Jack, was first imprisoned in 2018 after being caught by online paedophile hunters attempting to communicate with what he believed were underage girls.
His criminal history includes a conviction for having sex with a minor, which led to a suspended sentence.
Despite this, Huckle was released earlier in 2020, only to quickly resume his predatory behavior.
Within weeks of his release, Huckle was actively involved in online chats with what he thought were two 14-year-old girls.
These conversations were with decoy profiles created by groups such as Dark Justice and Guardians of the North, organizations that operate fake social media accounts to catch adults seeking to engage sexually with minors.
Huckle sent over 300 messages, requesting explicit images and discussing meeting up in person.
One of the decoy profiles, posing as a 14-year-old girl, was contacted by Huckle, who asked to meet her at Gateshead Stadium.
During the online exchanges, he was repeatedly told that the profiles belonged to minors, yet he persisted in his attempts to arrange a physical meeting.
When he arrived at the designated location, he was confronted by vigilantes from Dark Justice.
In a failed attempt to escape, Huckle tried to run away, smashing his phone and attempting to strike a member of the vigilante group, though he missed.
Prosecutor Harry Hadfield explained that during police interviews, Huckle admitted to communicating with the decoy profiles but claimed his actions were driven by loneliness and intoxication.
He denied deliberately damaging his phone, claiming he did so in anger after dropping it while fleeing.
Huckle, of Coverdale, Leam Lane, Gateshead, pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and breaching a sexual harm prevention order.
He was sentenced to 20 months in prison.
His criminal record includes a suspended sentence in 2017 for sexual activity with a child and a 2018 sentence for attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and breaching a sexual harm prevention order.
In a separate but related case, another Gateshead resident, known as Jack, was also caught attempting to meet a minor after being released from prison.
Jack, who changed his name following abuse he received due to his past convictions, was also involved in online chats with decoy profiles set up by paedophile hunters.
He believed he was speaking to a 15-year-old girl named Amy on the Whisper app, where messages disappear after a short time.
According to court reports, Jack engaged in sexually explicit conversations, complimenting the decoy and discussing how she should dress, including suggestions about her underwear and skirt length.
An arrangement was made to meet at Gateshead Stadium.
When Jack arrived, he was confronted by vigilantes from Dark Justice.
He attempted to flee, smashing his phone and throwing a punch at a vigilante, which missed.
Judge Penny Moreland at Newcastle Crown Court sentenced Jack to 20 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and breaching his sexual harm prevention order.
The judge emphasized that Jack had persisted in conversations with what he believed were 15-year-olds, engaging in sexualized discussions and grooming behaviors.
Jack, who had previously received a suspended sentence in 2017 for sexual activity with a minor, was ordered to register as a sex offender and comply with a new 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
Both cases highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and volunteer organizations to combat online child exploitation, as well as the persistent threat posed by individuals like Huckle and Jack, who continue to reoffend despite previous convictions and legal restrictions.
