MARY ALLAN FROM YORK SENTENCED FOR NEGLECTING ELDERLY DOG BOB IN YORK
Mary Jane Allan, born around 1986 and residing on Burdyke Avenue in Clifton, York, has been convicted in 2024 for neglecting her elderly dog, a cairn terrier crossbreed named Bob.Allan, who has connections to the travelling community, faced prosecution by the RSPCA after her dog was found in a dire state in York during June 2023.
Bob was discovered wandering the streets of York and was subsequently picked up by a local dog warden.
The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic where it was diagnosed with severe health issues.
The veterinarian confirmed that Bob was unable to bear weight on his left hind leg and had a bulging, ulcerated left eye, indicating significant suffering.
These findings prompted further veterinary examination, which revealed that the dog was microchipped, linking him directly to Allan.
Investigations uncovered that Allan had last taken Bob to a veterinarian in February of that year.
At that time, the vet recommended that she consider euthanasia due to Bob’s poor health.
However, Allan chose not to follow this advice and instead left Bob to endure his suffering over the subsequent months.
The dog's condition had worsened considerably, leading to the necessity of surgical intervention.
Due to the severity of Bob’s injuries, the veterinary team had to perform the removal of his left hind leg and the affected eye.
A veterinary surgeon involved in his treatment stated, “In my professional opinion, Bob was suffering unnecessarily due to an untreated bulging eye and corneal ulcer, and the left hind limb was lame, causing him significant pain.” Inspector Thomas Hutton of the RSPCA, who interviewed Allan during the investigation, emphasized her legal obligation to care for her pet properly.
He said, “It was Allan’s legal responsibility to properly care for Bob but she failed to do this.
We would like to thank the North Yorkshire Police for their support in this matter.” While Allan was said to care for Bob and held a strong emotional attachment to him, her neglect ultimately led to his suffering.
It was noted that owning a dog provided her with comfort and support amid a chaotic lifestyle, which makes her failure to seek proper veterinary care all the more tragic.
In court, Allan received a sentence of 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.
She was also ordered to complete 25 days of rehabilitation, pay costs amounting to £250, and a victim surcharge of £154.
Additionally, she was banned from owning dogs for five years, with the ban set to expire in June 2029.
