LEEDS RAPIST MARTIN HENNIGAN SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE
In April 2013, a man from Leeds who committed a series of heinous sexual assaults and violent attacks was sentenced to a decade behind bars.Martin Hennigan, aged 51, was handed this substantial prison term after a Leeds Crown Court trial, where he was found guilty of multiple serious charges.
The court heard that Hennigan, residing on Rockwood Avenue in the Osmondthorpe area of Leeds, was responsible for a disturbing series of crimes that spanned over two decades, involving a woman and two young boys.
According to the evidence presented during the trial, Hennigan was convicted of rape, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and two charges of child cruelty.
The jury was informed that these offences took place more than 20 years ago, highlighting a long history of troubling conduct that only came to light after a thorough investigation.
During the sentencing, Judge James Spencer, QC, described the nature of Hennigan’s crimes as “sadistic” and emphasized their gravity.
He remarked that, when considered individually, each offence represented a wicked act, but collectively, they painted a picture of a man responsible for a “horrendous catalogue of abuse.” Addressing the attacks on the woman, the judge stated, “On at least one occasion, you raped her, and on another, you inflicted such violence that she sustained significant injuries.” The severity of the violence and the cruelty involved in these assaults underscored the seriousness of the case.
Hennigan’s legal representative, Hilary Manley, maintained that her client continued to deny any guilt despite the jury’s verdict.
She acknowledged that Hennigan accepted the inevitable lengthy prison sentence and suggested that it would be unrealistic to argue for a shorter term before the court.
Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Dave Cowley from the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit spoke to the Yorkshire Evening Post.
He described Hennigan’s actions as a “horrendous catalogue of abuse” and expressed hope that the conviction would bring some measure of relief to the victims.
DI Cowley also highlighted the complexity and sensitivity involved in the investigation, which spanned many years.
He added, “We hope this case reassures other victims that their complaints will be taken seriously, thoroughly investigated, and that we will do everything possible to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
