DANIEL GIZZIE AND MARTIN BENTLEY FROM BIRMINGHAM JAILED FOR SADISTIC TORTURE OF 23-MONTH-OLD BOY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, two men from Birmingham were sentenced to prison for their brutal treatment of a 23-month-old toddler.The incident involved a series of sadistic acts carried out by the two individuals, Martin Bentley and Daniel Gizzie, which were so severe that they were recorded on their mobile phones, capturing the horrifying abuse.
According to court proceedings, Bentley, aged 26 and residing on Medina Road in Tyseley, and Gizzie, aged 19 from Dagnall Road in Acocks Green, subjected the young child to relentless cruelty.
The abuse was not confined to indoor acts; the assailants even took the defenseless toddler outside to continue their assault, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the child's safety and well-being.
The severity of their actions prompted a passer-by to contact the NSPCC, alarmed by the distressing scenes they witnessed.
Warwick Crown Court heard harrowing details of the case, including the moment police arrived at Bentley’s residence.
By that time, both Bentley and Gizzie had already left with the child, adding to the distress of the investigation.
During the court session, the judge, Christopher Hodson, watched clips from the offenders’ mobile phones, which depicted the abuse.
The courtroom was filled with gasps of horror and audible reactions of “No” and “Oh God” from the public gallery as the footage was played, underscoring the brutality of the acts committed.
Judge Hodson sentenced Bentley to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to two charges of cruelty to a child and one count of common assault.
Gizzie received a 15-month detention order after admitting to two charges of cruelty.
The judge expressed his profound disgust, stating, “There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that your behaviour towards this young, vulnerable, and defenceless child was sadistic in nature and that you both drew pleasure in what you were doing.
The video clips showed that.” Prosecutor Glyn Samuel explained that the incident began when Bentley was babysitting the child.
The child's mother was only made aware of the injuries after Bentley texted her, claiming the toddler had fallen and hurt his nose.
Later, Bentley called her from a pub, holding the phone to the boy’s ear so she could hear him upset.
Upon hearing this, the mother immediately went to collect her son from Bentley, who was intoxicated, and Gizzie, who was caring for the child at the time.
The child's injuries were evident: a red cheek, a sore and bruised nose, and a soiled nappy.
Initially, no action was taken, but the following day, when the child was taken to nursery, the mother showed staff the injuries, prompting police involvement.
During their arrest, officers discovered messages and videos on the phones of Bentley and Gizzie, revealing the extent of the abuse.
Gizzie’s legal representative, Samantha Forsyth, acknowledged her client’s remorse, stating that he accepted there was no excuse for his behaviour.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community and highlights the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable children from harm.
