MARK WELDRAKE OF COULBY NEWHAM SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX ABUSE IN TEESSIDE

In October 2021, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse culminated in a severe prison sentence for Mark Weldrake, a 56-year-old man from Coulby Newham. Weldrake was found guilty of committing heinous acts of sexual violence against two young boys during the 1990s, acts that have left lasting scars on his victims and the community alike.

Weldrake appeared at Teesside Crown Court via videolink from Durham Prison to face sentencing. Throughout the proceedings, he showed no visible reaction to the statements read out by his victims, who bravely recounted their traumatic experiences. The court heard that Weldrake had pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges, including five counts of raping a child under the age of 13, one count of raping a child over 13, indecent assault on a male, and a serious sexual assault.

The first victim, who was of primary school age at the time of the abuse, was warned by Weldrake not to disclose what had happened. The victim remained silent for a decade, too frightened to speak out until he confided in his partner in 2020. It was then that he reported his concerns to the police, revealing that a second victim had also been abused by Weldrake during the same period.

In a heartfelt statement read to the court, the first victim expressed the profound impact of the abuse: “I was a normal, happy little lad, always out playing before this happened. I don’t think you ever get over something like that. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders now I have told the police.”

The second victim, also a child at the time of the assault, later confronted Weldrake about the abuse. Weldrake admitted his guilt, which led to the second victim struggling with lifelong emotional and psychological difficulties. He described feeling misunderstood, saying, “People think I am quiet and arrogant, but it’s not true. I have a lot to say, but I don’t have the confidence. I wonder why me.” He also reflected on the lost opportunities and the profound impact the abuse had on his life.

During the court proceedings, the second victim recounted how Weldrake had told him to “shut up” during the abuse. The Probation Service reported that Weldrake was unable to explain his offending behavior and appeared “detached from it,” indicating a lack of remorse or understanding of his actions.

Judge Howard Crowson addressed Weldrake directly, describing him as an “offender of particular concern,” and sentenced him to a total of 24 years in prison—22 years to be served behind bars, followed by two years on extended licence. Additionally, the judge imposed lifelong supervision requirements and a sexual harm prevention order that prohibits Weldrake from having any contact with children under the age of 16. These measures are designed to protect the community and prevent further harm from the convicted offender.
