MARK TODD FROM MIDDLESBROUGH JAILED FOR GROOMING 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHILE PRETENDING TO BE FOOTBALLER
In July 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Mark Todd, a resident of Middlesbrough, who was convicted of sexually grooming an 11-year-old girl through social media.Todd, aged 27 at the time, engaged in a calculated effort to manipulate and exploit the young girl by pretending to be a footballer, a deception that he believed would make his advances more convincing.
Over a span of four days, Todd maintained persistent contact with the girl, who was unaware that her online interactions were with someone posing as a fictitious footballer.
During this period, he sent her sexually explicit images and made repeated attempts to persuade her to perform a sexual act on herself.
The communication was marked by an element of grooming, as Todd sought to build a false sense of trust and manipulate her into engaging in sexual activity.
Prosecutor Harry Hadfield highlighted that Todd’s conduct involved grooming behaviors over the three-day period, during which he explicitly incited the girl to touch herself.
The case revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior, with Todd encouraging the young girl to engage in self-sexual activity under the guise of a relationship with a supposed footballer.
During the court proceedings, Judge Paul Watson QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, addressed Todd’s actions.
He acknowledged the grooming element but emphasized that the sexual activity involved was at a lower level, specifically involving the girl touching her own body as instructed by Todd.
The judge stated, “He told her he was a footballer and told her he was 16.
I accept that there is an element of grooming but it is just an element.
The sexual activity was at the lower level of sexual activity, getting her to touch her own body.” Mark Todd, of Pilkington Street in Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual communication with a child under 13, and possessing indecent images between December 2018 and January 2019.
His actions demonstrated a calculated attempt to exploit a vulnerable young girl through online manipulation.
The court sentenced Todd to 20 months in custody.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Watson remarked, “The contact between you and the person you believed you were in contact with, became increasingly sexual – you were asking her to touch herself in a sexual manner.” The case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from predators operating under false pretenses.
