MARK REED FROM CHRISTCHURCH JAILED OVER CHILD SEX IMAGE SCANDAL
In June 2012, a Christchurch-based estate agent named Mark Reed was sentenced to a total of 16 months in prison after being found guilty of viewing and distributing highly disturbing child abuse images. The case, which drew significant attention, revealed the extent of Reed’s involvement in the possession and dissemination of explicit material involving minors.According to court proceedings at Bournemouth Crown Court, Reed, aged 34, had downloaded and shared a series of heinous images and videos depicting children engaged in sexual acts. The material was particularly grotesque, including scenes involving animals, gang rape, and the use of sex toys, highlighting the severity of his offenses.
The investigation that led to Reed’s arrest was conducted by the Metropolitan Police, who traced his online activity back to his parents’ residence located on Stony Lane in Burton. When police officers arrived at the property to execute a search warrant, they discovered an alarming collection of images. The officers found stacks of graphic images involving naked children aged between three and thirteen years old, illustrating the disturbing nature of Reed’s collection.
During police interviews, Reed admitted that he had been addicted to cocaine and that his consumption of child abuse images had been ongoing for approximately three to four years prior to his arrest in March of that year. Despite the gravity of the charges, Reed chose to plead guilty, showing no visible emotion as he sat in the courtroom dock. His parents, present in the gallery, were visibly distressed, with their heads bowed as the details of Reed’s collection were read aloud.
The court heard that Reed’s descent into this behavior was partly triggered by financial difficulties. It was revealed that he had accumulated debts while attempting to buy out a business partner, which contributed to his downward spiral. Judge Roger Jarvis, presiding over the case, expressed a somber reflection on the suffering endured by the victims, stating, “One wonders whether you ever on occasion stopped to think about the life these children must be suffering. You should do that and you will have plenty of chance to do that in the future.”
Reed was sentenced to serve concurrent terms for his various offenses. His sentences included 16 months for distributing level 4 and 5 images, 12 months for distributing and creating level 3 and 4 images, three months for level 2 images, ten weeks for level 1 images, and two months for the possession of extreme images. Upon release, Reed will be required to register as a sex offender for ten years and will be disqualified from working with children, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes.
