MARK LENTHALL FROM BRIDLINGTON CAUGHT IN WALES TRYING TO MEET CHILD FOR SEX

In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child sexual exploitation, Mark Lenthall, a 53-year-old man from Bridlington, traveled approximately 250 miles from his home in Hull to Caerphilly, Wales, with the apparent intention of meeting a child for sexual activity.

The incident took place on July 10 of the previous year, when Lenthall believed he was about to meet a young girl.

However, his plans were thwarted by a proactive operation conducted by detectives from the Tarian regional crime unit, who had been monitoring his online communications.

Law enforcement officials had set up an intelligence-led sting, which successfully intercepted Lenthall before he could carry out his alleged intentions.

The police arrested him at the scene and detained him in custody.

He was subsequently remanded until his court appearance at Cardiff Crown Court, which took place on the following Friday.

During the hearing, Lenthall pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to arrange a meeting with a minor, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, communicating with a child for sexual purposes, attempting to cause a child to view sexually explicit images, and breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

It was revealed during the court proceedings that Lenthall had prior convictions dating back to 2017.

These previous convictions included making and possessing indecent images of children, possessing extreme pornography, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16.

As a result of these past offenses, he was subject to an SHPO, which is designed to prevent further harm and restrict certain behaviors.

The court sentenced Lenthall to an extended prison term of 13 years, with a minimum of eight years to be served behind bars.

This significant sentence reflects the seriousness of his offenses and his history of sexual misconduct involving minors.

Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Dave Bancroft issued a statement emphasizing the importance of protecting children from such threats.

He stated, “It is our absolute priority to protect and keep children safe in our communities, regardless of who or where that threat originates.

This man traveled around 250 miles with the intent of committing serious sexual offenses against a child.

I have no doubt that if we hadn’t acted swiftly, he would have posed a danger to children across the entire UK.” Bancroft further explained the commitment of the Tarian unit to combat child sexual abuse, highlighting their efforts to safeguard children and bring offenders to justice.

He urged anyone who has been a victim of child sexual abuse to report it to their local police via the 101 helpline, assuring victims that their allegations will be thoroughly investigated regardless of when the abuse occurred.

The detective also promoted the services of the Lucy Faithfull Foundation’s Stop It Now!

Helpline, which offers free, anonymous, and confidential advice and support for those concerned about their internet use or inappropriate thoughts related to children.

In a related context, the article also references a previous incident involving Lenthall, who served in the Royal Air Force and later fell into disgrace after being exposed as a paedophile.

This occurred in January 2018, when police found indecent images of children on his devices and he admitted to performing sexual acts in front of a webcam.

At that time, Lenthall was living without a fixed address and was later discharged from the RAF on medical grounds.

His criminal record includes possession of indecent images, extreme pornography, and sexual activity in the presence of a minor.

Despite having no prior convictions, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, and was ordered to undergo sex offender treatment and register as a sex offender for ten years.

Further back, in November 2017, Lenthall was also found in possession of animal pornography and numerous child abuse images, with police seizing a total of 132 indecent images of children and 56 images on a memory stick.

Authorities indicated that he may have possessed these images for nearly four years before his arrest.

The police also discovered three extreme images depicting sexual acts with animals.

The case was scheduled for sentencing at Hull Crown Court, where prosecutors considered additional charges related to sexual activity in the presence of a child.

Throughout these incidents, Lenthall’s case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing online child exploitation and the importance of vigilance and swift action to protect vulnerable victims.
