MARK HAMPSON FROM DONCASTER CAUGHT IN BOLTON CHILD GROOMING PLOT
In December 2020, a disturbing case of online child grooming unfolded involving Mark Andrew Hampson, a 44-year-old man from Doncaster.Hampson engaged in a sinister attempt to sexually exploit a 14-year-old girl by posing as a professional footballer to gain her trust and manipulate her.
Hampson created a fake social media profile, explicitly indicating that the individual behind the account was a 14-year-old girl named Mia.
The profile was carefully crafted to appear authentic, with details that made it clear the girl was a minor.
In November 2019, Hampson sent a friend request to the girl, who was only identified by her Facebook profile name, Mia.
Soon after, he began messaging her, initiating a series of conversations that quickly turned inappropriate.
One of the earliest and most troubling questions Hampson asked was about the girl’s underwear, inquiring about its color.
The girl did not respond to this particular question but did inform him of her age, confirming she was only 14.
Despite her age, Hampson pressed further, asking if he could see her legs.
The court was told that he then sent her two indecent photographs, made obscene suggestions, and urged her to behave in a sexually explicit manner.
Further conversations revealed that a few days later, when Mia had just returned home from school, Hampson continued his predatory behavior.
He claimed to be naked in his messages and sent her additional indecent images.
The court heard that he also sent her pictures of other people engaged in sexual acts, further demonstrating his intent to exploit her.
On November 30, Hampson engaged in another exchange with Mia, during which he continued to send explicit messages and images.
Following this, arrangements were made for him to meet the girl in Bolton.
However, before the meeting could take place, Hampson was arrested by Greater Manchester Police.
The authorities had uncovered his online activity and identified the fake profile, which made it clear that the girl was a minor.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Hampson, now 45 and residing on Balby Road in Doncaster, was already serving a suspended sentence for an unrelated offence.
The court considered imposing a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct.
At the sentencing hearing, Judge Graeme Smith decided to bail Hampson until December 17, allowing time to consider whether the fact that there was no actual live victim in the case would influence the severity of the sentence.
The case highlighted the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting minors from exploitation.
