MARK BUCKLEY AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN CHESTER AND WINSFORD

A man convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving a young girl in Winsford has been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison. Mark Buckley, whose crimes included the horrific assault on a 10-year-old child, was found guilty after a seven-day trial held at Chester Crown Court. The court concluded its proceedings on Tuesday, March 5, and the severity of the case prompted a detailed sentencing hearing.

Buckley, aged 48 and currently residing on Hoole Road in Chester, appeared once again before the court on Thursday, May 2, for the sentencing process. The judge presiding over the case, Judge Steven Everett, delivered a stern judgment. Buckley was convicted of the rape of the child as well as two counts of sexual assault against a minor. The court sentenced him to 16 years of imprisonment, complemented by a further 12 months on extended license, a measure intended to monitor him following his release.

The sentence structure mandates that Buckley must serve at least two-thirds of the 16-year term before being considered for parole. Prosecutor Karl Scholz provided details about the victim, emphasizing her age at the time of the offenses. The young girl suffered physical injury, including bruising on her arm, which highlighted the violence of Buckley's actions. The court heard that these offenses took place against her in Winsford, a town in Cheshire, raising serious concerns about his impact on the community and the safety of children.

Earlier in August 2021, Buckley received a suspended sentence for several previous offenses, including possession of indecent images of children and attempting to engage children online for sexual purposes. However, he repeatedly breached the terms of his suspended sentence and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, leading to a subsequent incarceration. It was during this period, as Buckley was nearing potential release, that the victim confided in a friend’s relative about her experiences. She shared her nightmares and her feelings of hatred towards Buckley should their paths cross again.

In her personal statement read out in court, the girl revealed the lasting emotional scars caused by the trauma, noting her ongoing struggles with sleep and her fears about encountering Buckley again. Her bravery in coming forward was acknowledged by the judge and the prosecution.

Defence lawyer Simon Parry acknowledged that Buckley's sentence would be significant but argued that he did not meet the criteria for 'dangerousness' that might justify an even longer penalty. Despite this, Judge Everett made it clear that Buckley's actions revealed a disturbing lack of remorse and consideration for the safety of children. In his remarks, the judge stated, “There is not a single redeeming feature for you,” emphasizing Buckley's disregard for others.

He also praised the courage of the young victim, expressing hope that she would find some degree of closure and be able to rebuild her life in the aftermath of these events. The judge’s comments underscored the gravity of Buckley's offenses and his character, reinforcing that his conduct was without justification.

Cheshire Police, represented by Detective Constable Bryony Aston, voiced strong support for the victim’s bravery and highlighted the importance of reporting such crimes. Aston pointed out that Buckley showed no remorse and that the conviction should serve as reassurance for the community. She reiterated the police’s commitment to thoroughly investigating all allegations of sexual offenses, prioritizing the needs and wishes of victims. The police also stressed the importance of victims feeling safe to come forward without fear of shame or stigma, assuring them of confidentiality and support.

Buckley's family expressed their gratitude to Detective Constable Aston for her unwavering assistance throughout the ordeal. They stated that her efforts had helped them navigate this difficult period and that, thanks to her dedication, Buckley now faces the consequences of his crimes. This, they added, marks a step forward in their process of healing and moving on.

In addition to the 17-year prison term, Buckley received a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order. This order prohibits him from contacting or residing with children under the age of 16 and restricts his internet usage, requiring any devices to be made available for police inspection. Furthermore, Buckley is subject to a lifetime restraining order preventing him from approaching the victim. His name will also remain on the Sex Offenders Register for the rest of his life, maintaining oversight of his presence in the community and reducing the risk of further harm.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and judicial authorities to protect vulnerable children and hold offenders accountable for their reprehensible actions. The verdict and sentences reflect the seriousness with which these crimes are treated in Cheshire and signify a commitment to safeguarding children from predators like Mark Buckley.
